Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.Maskil (cantique) d'Asaph. My people, listen to my teachings. Listen to the things I say.
I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:J'ouvrirai ma bouche pour prononcer des discours sententieux; je publierai les secrets des temps anciens,I will tell you this story. I will tell you this old story.
Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.Que nous avons entendus et connus, et que nos pères nous ont racontés.We heard the story, and we know it well. Our fathers told this story.
We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done. And we will not forget the story. Our people will be telling the story to the last generation. We will all praise the Lord, and tell about the amazing things he did.
For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:Il établit un témoignage en Jacob; il mit en Israël une loi, qu'il ordonna à nos pères de faire connaître à leurs enfants; The Lord made an Agreement with Jacob. God gave the Law to Israel. God gave the commands to our ancestors. He told our ancestors to teach the Law to their descendants.
That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:Afin que la génération suivante, les enfants à venir, la connussent, et qu'en grandissant ils la racontassent à leurs enfants;New children will be born. They will grow to become adults. And they will tell the stories to their children. In this is the way, people will know the Law, even to the last generation.
That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:Qu'ils missent en Dieu leur confiance, qu'ils n'oubliassent pas les oeuvres de Dieu, et qu'ils gardassent ses commandements; So all those people will trust God. They will not forget what God did. They will carefully obey his commands.
And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.Et qu'ils ne fussent pas, comme leurs pères, une génération rebelle et indocile, génération qui ne disposa point son coeur, et dont l'esprit ne fut pas fidèle à Dieu.If the people teach their God’s commands to their children, then the children will not be like their ancestors. Their ancestors turned against God. They refused to obey him. Those people were stubborn. They were not loyal to God’s Spirit.
The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle. The men from Ephraim had their weapons, but they ran away from the battle.
They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;Ils n'ont point gardé l'alliance de Dieu, et n'ont pas voulu marcher dans sa loi. They didn’t keep their Agreement with God. They refused to obey his teachings.
And forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them. Those men from Ephraim forgot the great things God did. They forgot the amazing things he showed them.
Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan. God showed their fathers his great power at Zoan in Egypt.
He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap.Il fendit la mer et les fit passer; il dressa les eaux comme en un monceau;God split the Red Sea and led the people across. The water stood like a solid wall on both sides of them.
In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire. Each day God led them with the tall cloud. And each night God led them with the light from the column of fire.
He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths. God split the rock in the desert. He gave those people water from deep in the ground.
He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers. God brought the water streaming from the rock like a river!
And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness. But the people continued to sin against God. They turned against God Most-High even in the desert.
And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust. Then those people decided to test God. They asked God for food, just to satisfy their appetites.
Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness? They complained about God and said, Can God give us food in the desert?
Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people? He hit the rock and a flood of water came out. Surely he can give us some bread and meat!
Therefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;Aussi l'Éternel l'entendit et s'indigna; un feu s'alluma contre Jacob, et la colère s'éleva contre Israël;The Lord heard what those people said. God was very angry at Jacob. God was very angry at Israel.
Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:Parce qu'ils n'avaient pas cru en Dieu, et ne s'étaient pas confiés en son salut. Why? Because the people did not trust him. They did not believe God could save them.
Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,Alors il commanda aux nuées en haut, et ouvrit les portes des cieux. But then God opened the clouds above, and manna rained down on them for food.
And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven. It was like doors in the sky opened, and grain poured down from a storehouse in the sky.
Man did eat angels' food: he sent them meat to the full. People ate the food of angels. God sent plenty of food to satisfy them.
He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind. God sent a strong wind from the east, and quail fell on them like rain.
He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:Il fit pleuvoir sur eux de la chair comme de la poussière, et des oiseaux ailés, comme le sable des mers.God made the wind blow from Teman, and the blue sky became dark because there were so many birds.
And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations. The birds fell right in the middle of camp, all around those people’s tents.
So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;Ils mangèrent et furent abondamment repus; il leur accorda ce qu'ils désiraient. They had plenty to eat, but they let their appetites make them sin.
They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,Ils n'en avaient pas perdu l'envie, les mets étaient encore dans leur bouche,They did not control their appetites, so they ate the quail before draining the blood from the birds.
The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel. God became very angry at those people, and he killed many of them. God caused many healthy young people to die.
For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works. But the people still sinned again! They didn’t depend on the amazing things that God could do.
Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble. So God ended their worthless lives with some disaster.
When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God.Quand il les tuait, ils s'enquéraient de lui, et se remettaient à chercher Dieu.Whenever God killed some of them, the others would turn back to him. They would come running back to God.
And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer. Those people would remember that God was their Rock, They would remember that God Most-High saved them.
Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues. They said they loved him, but they lied. Those people were not serious.
For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant. Their hearts were not really with God. They were not faithful to the Agreement.
But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath. But God was merciful. He forgave them for their sins. And he did not destroy them. Many times God controlled his anger. He didn‘t let himself become too angry.
For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again. God remembered they were only people. People are like a wind that blows, and then it is gone.
How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert! Oh, those people caused God so many troubles in the desert! They made him so sad!
Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.Ils recommencèrent à tenter Dieu et à provoquer le Saint d'Israël;Again and again those people tested God’s patience. They really hurt the Holy One of Israel.
They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy.Ils ne se souvinrent plus de sa main, du jour où il les délivra de l'oppresseur,Those people forgot about God’s power. They forgot the many times that God saved them from the enemy.
How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan. They forgot the miracles in Egypt, the miracles in the fields of Zoan.
And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.Qu'il changea leurs fleuves en sang, et ils n'en burent plus les ondes;God turned the rivers to blood! The Egyptians could not drink the water.
He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.Qu'il envoya contre eux des insectes pour les dévorer et des grenouilles pour les infester;God sent swarms of flies that bit the people of Egypt. God sent the frogs that ruined the Egyptians’ lives.
He gave also their increase unto the caterpiller, and their labour unto the locust.Qu'il livra leur récolte aux vermisseaux, et leur travail aux sauterelles;God gave their crops to the grasshoppers, and their other plants to the locusts.
He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycomore trees with frost.Qu'il tua leurs vignes par la grêle, et leurs sycomores par les frimas;God used hail to destroy their vines. And he used sleet to destroy their trees.
He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.Qu'il livra leur bétail à la grêle, et leurs troupeaux à la foudre;God killed their animals with hail, and their cattle with lightning.
He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them. God showed the Egyptian people his anger. He sent his destroying angels against them.
He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;Il donna carrière à sa colère, et ne préserva point leur âme de la mort; il livra leur vie à la mortalité.God found a way to show his anger. He did not let any of those people live. He let them die with a deadly disease.
And smote all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham:Il frappa dans l'Égypte tous les premiers-nés, les prémices de la force dans les tentes de Cham.God killed all the firstborn sons in Egypt. He killed every firstborn in Ham’s family.
But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock. Then God led Israel like a shepherd. He led his people like sheep into the desert.
And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies. He guided his people safely. His people had nothing to be afraid of. He drowned their enemies in the Red Sea.
And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased. God led his people to his holy land, to the mountain he took with his power.
He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents. God forced the other nations to leave that land. God gave each family its share of the land. God gave each family group of Israel its home to live in.
Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:Mais ils tentèrent et irritèrent le Dieu Très-Haut, et ne gardèrent point ses témoignages. But they tested God Most-High and made him very sad. Those people didn‘t obey God’s commands.
But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow. The people of Israel turned away from God. They turned against him just like their fathers did. They changed directions like a boomerang.
For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images. The people of Israel built high places and made God angry. They built statues of false gods and made God very jealous.
When God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:Dieu l'entendit et s'indigna; il prit Israël en aversion.God heard this and became very angry. And He rejected Israel completely!
So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men;Il abandonna la demeure de Silo, la tente qu'il avait dressée parmi les hommes.God abandoned the Holy Tent at Shiloh. God lived in that tent among the people.
And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy's hand. God let other nations capture his people. Enemies took God’s beautiful jewel.
He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance. God showed his anger against his people. He let them be killed in war.
The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage. The young men were burned to death, and the girls they were to marry sang no wedding songs.
Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation. The priests were killed, but the widows did not cry for them.
Then the LORD awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine. Finally, our Master got up like a man waking from his sleep, like a soldier after drinking too much wine.
And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach. God forced his enemy back and defeated them. God defeated his enemies and disgraced them forever.
Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:Mais il rejeta la tente de Joseph, et ne choisit pas la tribu d'Éphraïm.But God rejected Joseph’s family. God did not accept Ephraim’s family.
But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved. No, God chose Judah’s family group. God chose Zion, the mountain he loves.
And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever. God built his holy temple high on that mountain. God built his holy temple to last forever, just like the earth.
He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:Il choisit David son serviteur, et le prit des parcs des brebis.God chose David to be his special servant. David was guarding the sheep pens, but God took him away from that job.
From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance. David was caring for sheep, but God took him away from that job. God gave David the job of caring for his people, the people of Jacob, the people of Israel, God’s property.
So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands. And David led them with a pure heart. He led them very wisely.
