We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old. God, we have heard about you. Our fathers told us what you did in their lifetime. They told us what you did long ago.
How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out.Par ta main tu as chassé les nations et tu as établi nos pères; tu as brisé les peuples pour leur faire place.God, with your great power you took this land from other people, and you gave it to us. You crushed those foreign people. You forced them to leave this land.
For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them. It was not our father’s swords that took the land. It was not their strong arms that made them winners. It was because you were with our fathers. God, your great power saved our fathers. Why? Because you loved them!
Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.C'est toi, ô Dieu! qui es mon Roi; ordonne la délivrance de Jacob. My God, you are my king. Give the command and lead Jacob’s people to victory.
Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.Par toi nous frapperons nos ennemis; par ton nom nous foulerons ceux qui s'élèvent contre nous.My God, with your help, we will push back our enemies. With your name, we will walk on our enemies.
For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.Car je ne me confie pas en mon arc; ce n'est pas mon épée qui me sauvera.I don’t trust my bow and arrows. My sword can’t save me.
But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.C'est toi qui nous as sauvés de nos ennemis, et qui as rendu confus ceux qui nous haïssent.God, you saved us from Egypt. You put our enemies to shame.
In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. We have praised God all day long! And we will praise your name forever! SELAH
But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies. But, God, you left us. You embarrassed us. You did not come with us into battle.
Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves. You let our enemies push us back. Our enemies took our wealth.
Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen. You gave us away like sheep to be eaten as food. You scattered us among the foreigners.
Thou sellest thy people for nought, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price. God, you sold your people for nothing. You didn’t even argue over the price.
Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.Tu fais de nous l'opprobre de nos voisins, la risée et le jouet de nos alentours. You made us a joke to our neighbors. They laugh at us and make fun of us.
Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people. We are one of the funny stories people tell. Even people without a nation of their own laugh at us and shake their heads.
My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,Mon ignominie est toujours devant moi, et la confusion couvre mon visage,I am covered with shame. All day long I see my shame.
For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger. I hide in shame at the jokes and insults coming from my enemy who wanted to get even with me.
All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant. God, we have not forgotten you. Yet you do all those things to us. We did not lie when we signed our Agreement with you!
Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;Notre coeur ne s'est point retiré en arrière; nos pas ne se sont point écartés de ton sentier,God, we have not turned away from you. We have not stopped following you.
Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death. But, God, you crushed us in this place where jackals live. You left us in this place as dark as death.
If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;Si nous eussions oublié le nom de notre Dieu, si nous eussions étendu nos mains vers un dieu étranger,Did we forget the name of our God? Did we pray to foreign gods? No!
Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart. Surely, God knows these things. He knows even our deepest secrets.
Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. God, all day long we died for you! We were like sheep being led away to be killed.
Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.Lève-toi! Pourquoi dors-tu, Seigneur? Réveille-toi, ne nous rejette pas à toujours!Get up, my Master! Why are you sleeping? Get up! Don’t leave us forever!
Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?Pourquoi caches-tu ta face? Pourquoi oublies-tu notre misère et notre oppression?God, why are you hiding from us? Have you forgotten our pain and troubles?
For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth. We have been pushed down into the dirt. We are lying with our belly in the dust.
Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.Lève-toi, viens à notre aide, et rachète-nous à cause de ta bonté!God, get up and help us! Rescue us because of your true love!
