| 7 | The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. | La crainte de Yahweh est le commencement de la sagesse; les insensés méprisent la sagesse et l'instruction. |
| 8 | My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: | Ecoute, mon fils, l'instruction de ton père, et ne rejette pas l'enseignement de ta mère; |
| 9 | For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck. | car c'est une couronne de grâce pour ta tête, et une parure pour ton cou. |
| 10 | My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. | Mon fils, si des pécheurs veulent te séduire, ne donne pas ton acquiescement. |
| 11 | If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause: | S'ils disent : « Viens avec nous, dressons des embûches pour répandre le sang, tendons sans raison des pièges à l'innocent. |
| 12 | Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: | Engloutissons-les tout vifs, comme fait le schéol, tout entiers, comme ceux qui descendent dans la fosse. |
| 13 | We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: | Nous trouverons toutes sortes de biens précieux, nous remplirons de butin nos maisons; |
| 14 | Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: | tu tireras ta part au sort avec nous, il n'y aura qu'une bourse pour nous tous. » |
| 15 | My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: | Mon fils, ne va pas avec eux sur le chemin, détourne ton pied de leur sentier; |
| 16 | For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. | car leurs pieds courent au mal, ils se hâtent pour répandre le sang. |
| 17 | Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. | C'est vainement qu'on jette le filet devant les yeux de tout ce qui a des ailes; |
| 18 | And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives. | eux, c'est contre leur propre sang qu'ils dressent des embûches; c'est à leur âme qu'ils tendent des pièges. |
| 19 | So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof. | Telles sont les voies de tout homme âpre au gain; le gain cause la perte de ceux qui le détiennent. |
| 20 | Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets: | La sagesse crie dans les rues, elle élève sa voix sur les places. |
| 21 | She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying, | Elle prêche dans des carrefours bruyants; à l'entrée des portes, dans la ville, elle dit ses paroles : |
| 22 | How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? | « Jusques à quand, simples, aimerez-vous la simplicité ? Jusques à quand les railleurs se plaindront-ils à la raillerie, et les insensés haïront-ils la science ? |
| 23 | Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you. | Retournez-vous pour entendre ma réprimande; voici que je répandrai sur vous mon esprit, je vous ferai connaître mes paroles. |
| 24 | Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; | « Puisque j'appelle et que vous résistez, que j'étends ma main et que personne n'y prend garde, |
| 25 | But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: | puisque vous négligez tous mes conseils et que vous ne voulez pas de ma réprimande, |
| 26 | I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; | moi aussi je rirai de votre malheur, je me moquerai quand viendra sur vous l'épouvante, |
| 27 | When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. | quand l'épouvante viendra sur vous comme une tempête, que le malheur fondra sur vous comme un tourbillon, que viendront sur vous la détresse et l'angoisse. |
| 28 | Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: | « Alors ils m'appelleront, et je ne répondrai pas; ils me chercheront, et ils ne me trouveront pas. |
| 29 | For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: | Parce qu'ils ont haï la science, et qu'ils n'ont pas désiré la crainte de Yahweh, |
| 30 | They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. | parce qu'ils n'ont pas voulu de mes conseils, et qu'ils ont dédaigné toutes mes réprimandes, |
| 31 | Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. | ils mangeront du fruit de leur voie, et ils se rassasieront de leurs propres conseils. |
| 32 | For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. | Car l'égarement des simples les tue, et la sécurité des insensés les perd. |
| 33 | But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil. | Mais celui qui m'écoute reposera avec sécurité, il vivra tranquille, sans craindre le malheur. » |
