| 1 | Israel is a luxuriant vine, that putteth forth his fruit: according to the abundance of his fruit he hath multiplied his altars; according to the goodness of their land they have made goodly pillars. | Israele era una vigna lussureggiante, che dava frutto per se stesso, più cresceva il suo frutto, più moltiplicava gli altari; più ricco era il suo paese, più belle faceva le sue colonne sacre. |
| 2 | Their heart is divided; now shall they be found guilty: he will smite their altars, he will destroy their pillars. | Il loro cuore è diviso; ora ne porteranno la pena. Egli abbatterà i loro altari distruggerà le loro colonne sacre. |
| 3 | Surely now shall they say, We have no king; for we fear not Jehovah; and the king, what can he do for us? | Sì, ora diranno: Non abbiamo più re, perché non abbiamo temuto l'Eterno; ma anche il re che potrebbe fare per noi?. |
| 4 | They speak [vain] words, swearing falsely in making covenants: therefore judgment springeth up as hemlock in the furrows of the field. | Dicono parole, giurando il falso nello stabilire il patto; perciò il castigo fiorisce come la cicuta nei solchi dei campi. |
| 5 | The inhabitants of Samaria shall be in terror for the calves of Beth-aven; for the people thereof shall mourn over it, and the priests thereof that rejoiced over it, for the glory thereof, because it is departed from it. | Gli abitanti di Samaria avranno paura per il vitello di Beth-aven, perché per esso il suo popolo farà cordoglio e i suoi sacerdoti che si rallegravano su di esso tremeranno, perché la sua gloria si è allontanata da lui. |
| 6 | It also shall be carried unto Assyria for a present to king Jareb: Ephraim shall receive shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel. | L'idolo stesso sarà portato in Assiria, come un dono al re difensore. Efraim riceverà infamia e Israele, sarà svergognato per i suoi disegni. |
| 7 | [As for] Samaria, her king is cut off, as foam upon the water. | Quanto a Samaria, il suo re sarà annientato, come schiuma sull'acqua. |
| 8 | The high places also of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed: the thorn and the thistle shall come up on their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us; and to the hills, Fall on us. | Anche gli alti luoghi di Aven, il peccato d'Israele, saranno distrutti; spine e rovi cresceranno sui loro altari. Allora diranno ai monti: Copriteci!, e ai colli: Cadeteci addosso!. |
| 9 | O Israel, thou hast sinned from the days of Gibeah: there they stood; the battle against the children of iniquity doth not overtake them in Gibeah. | Fin dai giorni di Ghibeah tu hai peccato, o Israele. Là si fermarono; in Ghibeah la battaglia contro i figli dell'iniquità non li raggiunse. |
| 10 | When it is my desire, I will chastise them; and the peoples shall be gathered against them, when they are bound to their two transgressions. | Quando mi piacerà li castigherò; i popoli si raduneranno contro di loro, quando li legherò per le loro due iniquità. |
| 11 | And Ephraim is a heifer that is taught, that loveth to tread out [the grain]; but I have passed over upon her fair neck: I will set a rider on Ephraim; Judah shall plow, Jacob shall break his clods. | Efraim è una giovenca ben addestrata, a cui piace trebbiare il grano, ma io metterò il giogo sul suo bel collo; attaccherò Efraim all'aratro, Giuda arerà, Giacobbe, romperà le zolle. |
| 12 | Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap according to kindness; break up your fallow ground; for it is time to seek Jehovah, till he come and rain righteousness upon you. | Seminate per voi secondo giustizia, mietete secondo misericordia, dissodate il vostro campo non coltivato, perché è tempo di cercare l'Eterno, finché egli venga e faccia piovere su di voi la giustizia. |
| 13 | Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; ye have eaten the fruit of lies; for thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men. | Voi avete arato la malvagità, avete mietuto l'iniquità avete mangiato il frutto della menzogna. Poiché hai confidato nelle tue vie, nella moltitudine dei tuoi prodi, |
| 14 | Therefore shall a tumult arise among thy people, and all thy fortresses shall be destroyed, as Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel in the day of battle: the mother was dashed in pieces with her children. | un tumulto si leverà fra il tuo popolo e tutte le tue fortezze saranno devastate come Shalman devastò Beth-Arbel, nel giorno della battaglia, quando la madre fu sfracellata sui figli. |
| 15 | So shall Beth-el do unto you because of your great wickedness: at daybreak shall the king of Israel be utterly cut off. | Così sarà fatto di te, o Bethel, per la vostra immensa malvagità. Al mattino il re d'Israele sarà interamente distrutto. |
