| 1 | Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackcloth, and earth upon them. | Il ventiquattresimo giorno dello stesso mese, i figli d'Israele si radunarono per un digiuno, vestiti di sacco e coperti di terra. |

| 3 | And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of Jehovah their God a fourth part of the day; and [another] fourth part they confessed, and worshipped Jehovah their God. | Quindi si alzarono in piedi al loro posto e lessero il libro della legge dell'Eterno, il loro DIO, per la quarta parte del giorno, e per un'altra quarta parte fecero la confessione dei peccati e si prostrarono davanti all'Eterno, il loro DIO. |
| 4 | Then stood up upon the stairs of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, [and] Chenani, and cried with a loud voice unto Jehovah their God. | Poi Jeshua, Bani e Kadmiel, Scebaniah, Bunni, Scerebiah, Bani e Kenani salirono sulla tribuna dei Leviti e gridarono ad alta voce all'Eterno, il loro DIO. |
| 5 | Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, [and] Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless Jehovah your God from everlasting to everlasting; and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise. | I Leviti Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Scerebiah, Hodijah, Scebaniah e Pethahiah dissero: Alzatevi e benedite l'Eterno, il vostro DIO, d'eternità in eternità! | 6 | Thou art Jehovah, even thou alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all things that are thereon, the seas and all that is in them, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee. | Tu solo sei l'Eterno! Tu hai fatto i cieli dei cieli dei cieli e tutto il loro esercito, la terra e tutto ciò che sta su di essa, i mari e tutto ciò che è in essi. Tu conservi in vita tutte queste cose, e l'esercito dei cieli ti adora. |
| 7 | Thou art Jehovah the God, who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gavest him the name of Abraham, | Tu sei l'Eterno, il DIO che ha scelto Abramo; lo hai fatto uscire da Ur dei Caldei e gli hai dato il nome di Abrahamo, |
| 8 | and foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite, and the Girgashite, to give it unto his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous. | Tu hai trovato il suo cuore fedele davanti a te e hai stabilito un patto con lui, per dare alla sua discendenza il paese dei Cananei, degli Hittei, degli Amorei, dei Perezei, dei Gebusei e dei Ghirgasei; tu hai adempiuto la tua parola, perché sei giusto. |
| 9 | And thou sawest the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heardest their cry by the Red Sea, | Tu hai visto l'afflizione dei nostri padri in Egitto e hai udito il loro grido presso il Mar Rosso. |
| 10 | and showedst signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land; for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them, and didst get thee a name, as it is this day. | Hai operato miracoli e prodigi contro il Faraone, contro tutti i suoi servi e contro tutto il popolo del suo paese, perché sapevi che essi avevano trattato i nostri padri con insolenza. | 11 | And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their pursuers thou didst cast into the depths, as a stone into the mighty waters. | Tu hai diviso il mare davanti a loro, ed essi sono passati in mezzo al mare sull'asciutto, mentre invece tu precipitavi nell'abisso i loro inseguitori come una pietra in acque impetuose. |
| 12 | Moreover in a pillar of cloud thou leddest them by day; and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light in the way wherein they should go. | Tu li hai guidati di giorno con una colonna di nuvola e di notte con una colonna di fuoco per illuminare loro la via su cui camminare. |
| 13 | Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right ordinances and true laws, good statutes and commandments, | Sei pure disceso sul monte Sinai, hai parlato loro dal cielo e hai dato loro giusti decreti e leggi di verità, buoni statuti e comandamenti, |
| 14 | and madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them commandments, and statutes, and a law, by Moses thy servant, | Hai fatto loro conoscere il tuo santo sabato e hai dato loro comandamenti, statuti e una legge per mezzo di Mosè, tuo servo. |
| 15 | and gavest them bread from heaven for their hunger, and broughtest forth water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and commandedst them that they should go in to possess the land which thou hadst sworn to give them. | Tu hai pure dato loro pane dal cielo quando erano affamati e hai fatto scaturire acqua dalla roccia quando erano assetati, e comandasti loro di andare a prendere possesso del paese che avevi giurato di dare loro. |
| 16 | But they and our fathers dealt proudly and hardened their neck, and hearkened not to thy commandments, | Ma essi e i nostri padri si comportarono con superbia, indurirono la loro cervice e non ubbidirono ai tuoi comandamenti. |
| 17 | and refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them, but hardened their neck, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage. But thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness, and forsookest them not. | Si rifiutarono di ubbidire e non si ricordarono delle meraviglie che tu avevi compiuto in mezzo a loro; indurirono invece la loro cervice e nella loro ribellione si scelsero un capo per tornare alla loro schiavitù. Ma tu sei un Dio pronto a perdonare, misericordioso, pieno di compassione, lento all'ira e di grande benignità. Tu non li hai abbandonati, |
| 18 | Yea, when they had made them a molten calf, and said, This is thy God that brought thee up out of Egypt, and had wrought great provocations; | neppure quando si fecero un vitello di metallo fuso e dissero: "Questo è il tuo dio che ti ha fatto uscire dall'Egitto!", fecero così una cosa blasfema. |
| 19 | yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the pillar of cloud departed not from over them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to show them light, and the way wherein they should go. | Tuttavia nella tua grande misericordia non li hai abbandonati nel deserto, la colonna di nuvola non si allontanò da loro durante il giorno per guidarli nel cammino, e la colonna di fuoco durante la notte per illuminare loro la via su cui camminare. |
| 20 | Thou gavest also thy good Spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst. | Hai dato il tuo buono Spirito per istruirli; non hai rifiutato la tua manna alle loro bocche e hai dato loro acqua quando erano assetati. |
| 21 | Yea, forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness, [and] they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not. | Per quarant'anni li hai nutriti nel deserto, e non mancò loro nulla; le loro vesti non si logorarono e i loro piedi non si gonfiarono. |
| 22 | Moreover thou gavest them kingdoms and peoples, which thou didst allot after their portions: so they possessed the land of Sihon, even the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan. | Hai inoltre dato loro regni e popoli assegnando loro le regioni più lontane così essi entrarono in possesso del paese di Sihon, del paese del re di Heshbon e del paese di Og, re di Bashan. |
| 23 | Their children also multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land concerning which thou didst say to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it. | Hai moltiplicato i loro figli come le stelle del cielo e li hai introdotti nel paese in cui avevi detto ai padri loro di entrare per possederlo. |
| 24 | So the children went in and possessed the land, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the peoples of the land, that they might do with them as they would. | Così i loro figli entrarono e presero possesso del paese; tu hai umiliato davanti a loro gli abitanti del paese, i Cananei, e li hai dati nelle loro mani con i loro re e con i popoli del paese, perché ne facessero quel che a loro piaceva. |
| 25 | And they took fortified cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all good things, cisterns hewn out, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit-trees in abundance: so they did eat, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in thy great goodness. | Essi si impadronirono di città fortificate e di una terra fertile ed entrarono in possesso di case piene di ogni bene, di cisterne già scavate, di vigne, di uliveti e d'alberi fruttiferi in abbondanza, mangiarono, si saziarono, ingrassarono e vissero nelle delizie per la tua grande bontà. |
| 26 | Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their back, and slew thy prophets that testified against them to turn them again unto thee, and they wrought great provocations. | Ciò nonostante essi furono disubbidirono, si ribellarono contro di te, gettarono la tua legge dietro le spalle, uccisero i tuoi profeti che li esortavano a ritornare a te e commisero cose blasfeme. |
| 27 | Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their adversaries, who distressed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest from heaven; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours who saved them out of the hand of their adversaries. | Perciò tu li desti nelle mani dei loro nemici, che li oppressero; ma al tempo della loro sventura essi gridarono a te, e tu li ascoltasti dal cielo e, nella tua grande misericordia, tu desti loro dei liberatori, che li salvarono dalle mani dei loro nemici. |
| 28 | But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee; therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardest from heaven; and many times didst thou deliver them according to thy mercies, | Quando però avevano riposo, essi ricominciavano a compiere il male davanti a te; perciò tu li abbandonavi nelle mani dei loro nemici, che li dominavano; tuttavia, quando tornavano a gridare a te, tu li ascoltavi dal cielo, così nella tua misericordia molte volte li hai liberati. |
| 29 | and testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law. Yet they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandments, but sinned against thine ordinances, (which if a man do, he shall live in them,) and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear. | Tu li esortavi per farli tornare alla tua legge, ma essi si inorgoglivano e non ubbidivano ai tuoi comandamenti, e peccavano contro i tuoi decreti per mezzo dei quali, se uno li mette in pratica salva la vita; ritraevano le loro spalle dal giogo, indurivano la loro cervice e rifiutavano di ubbidire. |
| 30 | Yet many years didst thou bear with them, and testifiedst against them by thy Spirit through thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the peoples of the lands. | Pazientasti con essi per molti anni esortandoli mediante il tuo Spirito e per bocca dei tuoi profeti, ma essi non vollero prestare orecchio; allora tu li desti nelle mani dei popoli dei vari paesi. |
| 31 | Nevertheless in thy manifold mercies thou didst not make a full end of them, nor forsake them; for thou art a gracious and merciful God. | Però nella tua grande compassione non li hai interamente distrutti e non li hai abbandonati, perché sei un Dio clemente e misericordioso. |
| 32 | Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and lovingkindness, let not all the travail seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day. | Ora dunque, o DIO nostro, Dio grande, potente e tremendo, che mantieni il patto e la misericordia, non sembri poca cosa davanti a te la sciagura che è venuta su di noi, sui nostri re, sui nostri sacerdoti, sui nostri profeti, sui nostri padri e su tutto il tuo popolo, dal tempo dei re di Assiria fino al giorno d'oggi. |
| 33 | Howbeit thou art just in all that is come upon us; for thou hast dealt truly, but we have done wickedly; | Tuttavia tu sei stato giusto in tutto quello che ci è accaduto, perché tu hai agito fedelmente, mentre noi abbiamo agito empiamente. |
| 34 | neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies wherewith thou didst testify against them. | I nostri re, i nostri capi, i nostri sacerdoti i nostri padri non hanno messo in pratica la tua legge né hanno ubbidito ai tuoi comandamenti e ai tuoi precetti con cui li esortavi. |
| 35 | For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works. | Persino quando si trovavano nel loro regno, nella grande prosperità che tu avevi loro largito e nel vasto e fertile paese che avevi messo a loro disposizione, non ti servirono e non abbandonarono le loro opere malvagie. |
| 36 | Behold, we are servants this day, and as for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it. | E oggi eccoci schiavi! Siamo schiavi nel paese che avevi dato ai nostri padri perché ne mangiassero i frutti e ne godessero i beni. |
| 37 | And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have power over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress. | Così i suoi abbondanti prodotti vanno ai re che tu hai stabilito sopra di noi, a causa dei nostri peccati; essi signoreggiano sui nostri corpi e sul nostro bestiame come vogliono; e noi siamo in grande angoscia. |
| 38 | And yet for all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, our Levites, [and] our priests, seal unto it. | A motivo di tutto questo, noi prendiamo un fermo impegno e lo mettiamo per scritto; e i nostri capi, i nostri Leviti, e i nostri sacerdoti vi metteranno il loro sigillo. |
