| 1 | Now it came to pass, when it was reported to Sanballat and Tobiah, and to Geshem the Arabian, and unto the rest of our enemies, that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though even unto that time I had not set up the doors in the gates;) | Quando Sanballat, Tobiah e Ghescem l'Arabo e gli altri nostri nemici seppero che io avevo ricostruito le mura e che non vi era più rimasta alcuna breccia (quantunque allora non avessi ancora messo i battenti alle porte) |
| 2 | that Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in [one of] the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief. | Sanballat e Ghescem mi mandarono a dire: Vieni e troviamoci assieme in uno dei villaggi della valle di Ono. Essi però pensavano di farmi del male. |
| 3 | And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you? | Così io mandai loro dei messaggeri a dire: Sto facendo un grande lavoro e non posso scendere. Perché si dovrebbe interrompere il lavoro, mentre io lo lascio per scendere da voi?. |
| 4 | And they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner. | Per ben quattro volte essi mi mandarono a dire la stessa cosa, e io risposi loro nello stesso modo. |
| 5 | Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand, | Allora Sanballat mi mandò il suo servo a dirmi la stessa cosa per la quinta volta con in mano una lettera aperta, |
| 6 | wherein was written, It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel; for which cause thou art building the wall: and thou wouldest be their king, according to these words. | nella quale stava scritto: Corre voce fra le nazioni, e Gashmu l'afferma, che tu e i Giudei tramate di ribellarvi perciò, secondo queste voci, tu stai ricostruendo le mura, per diventare il loro re, |
| 7 | And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together. | e avresti persino stabilito dei profeti per fare la tua proclamazione a Gerusalemme, dicendo: "C'è un re in Giuda! Ora, queste cose saranno riferite al re. Perciò vieni e consultiamoci assieme. |
| 8 | Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart. | Ma io gli mandai a dire: Le cose non stanno come tu vai dicendo, ma tu le inventi nella tua stessa mente. |
| 9 | For they all would have made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. But now, [O God], strengthen thou my hands. | Tutta quella gente infatti voleva farci paura e diceva: Le loro mani lasceranno il lavoro che rimarrà incompiuto. Ora perciò, o DIO, fortifica le mie mani! |
| 10 | And I went unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee. | Io andai allora a casa di Scemaiah, figlio di Delaiah, figlio di Mehetabeel, che si era rinchiuso là dentro; egli mi disse: Troviamoci assieme nella casa di DIO, dentro il tempio, e chiudiamo le porte del tempio, perché verranno ad ucciderti; essi verranno a ucciderti di notte. |
| 11 | And I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who is there, that, being such as I, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in. | Ma io risposi: Può un uomo come me darsi alla fuga? Potrebbe un uomo simile a me entrare nel tempio per salvare la vita? No, io non entrerò. |
| 12 | And I discerned, and, lo, God had not sent him; but he pronounced this prophecy against me: and Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. | Compresi poi che DIO non l'aveva mandato, ma aveva pronunciato quella profezia contro di me, perché Tobiah e Sanballat l'avevano pagato. |
| 13 | For this cause was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me. | Era stato pagato proprio per questo: per farmi paura e indurmi ad agire in quel modo e a peccare, e così acquistare una cattiva fama e coprirmi di vergogna. |
| 14 | Remember, O my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear. | O mio DIO, ricordati di Tobiah e di Sanballat, per queste loro opere, e anche della profetessa Noadiah e degli altri profeti che hanno cercato di spaventarmi! |
| 15 | So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth [day] of [the month] Elul, in fifty and two days. | Or le mura furono condotte a termine il venticinquesimo giorno del mese di Elul, in cinquantadue giorni. |
| 16 | And it came to pass, when all our enemies heard [thereof], that all the nations that were about us feared, and were much cast down in their own eyes; for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God. | Quando tutti i nostri nemici lo vennero a sapere e tutte le nazioni che ci stavano attorno lo videro, si sentirono grandemente abbattuti, perché si resero conto che quest'opera si era compiuta con l'aiuto del nostro DIO. |
| 17 | Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and [the letters] of Tobiah came unto them. | In quei giorni anche i notabili di Giuda mandavano frequenti lettere a Tobiah, e ne ricevevano da Tobiah. |
| 18 | For there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah; and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah to wife. | Molti in Giuda erano infatti legati a lui con giuramento, perché egli era genero di Scekaniah figlio di Arah, e suo figlio Jehohanan aveva sposato la figlia di Meshullam, figlio di Berekiah. |
| 19 | Also they spake of his good deeds before me, and reported my words to him. [And] Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear. | Anche in mia presenza parlavano bene di lui e gli riferivano le mie parole. E Tobiah mandava lettere per spaventarmi |
