| 1 | Then there arose a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews. | Or si levò un gran lamento da parte del popolo e delle loro mogli contro i Giudei, loro fratelli. |
| 2 | For there were that said, We, our sons and our daughters, are many: let us get grain, that we may eat and live. | Alcuni dicevano: Noi, i nostri figli e le nostre figlie siamo numerosi, ci procureremo quindi del grano perché possiamo mangiare e vivere!. |
| 3 | Some also there were that said, We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses: let us get grain, because of the dearth. | Altri dicevano: Abbiamo ipotecato i nostri campi, le nostre vigne e le nostre case per comprare grano durante la carestia!. |
| 4 | There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king`s tribute [upon] our fields and our vineyards. | Altri ancora dicevano: Abbiamo preso denaro in prestito per pagare il tributo del re sui nostri campi e sulle nostre vigne. |
| 5 | Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage [already]: neither is it in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards. | Anche se la nostra carne è come la carne dei nostri fratelli e i nostri figli sono come i loro figli, siamo in realtà obbligati a fare diventare schiavi i nostri figli e le nostre figlie; alcune delle nostre figlie sono già state ridotte in schiavitù e non abbiamo alcuna possibilità di riscattarle, perché i nostri campi e le nostre vigne sono in mano di altri. |
| 6 | And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words. | Quando udii i loro lamenti e queste parole, io mi indignai fortemente. |
| 7 | Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I held a great assembly against them. | Dopo aver ben riflettuto sulla cosa ripresi i notabili e i magistrati e dissi loro: Ciascuno di voi esige un interesse da usuraio dal proprio fratello. Così convocai contro di loro una grande assemblea |
| 8 | And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, that were sold unto the nations; and would ye even sell your brethren, and should they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found never a word. | e dissi loro: Secondo la nostra possibilità noi abbiamo riscattato i nostri fratelli Giudei che si erano venduti ai Gentili; ma ora vendereste i vostri fratelli, o dovrebbero essi vendersi a noi?. Allora essi tacquero non trovando parole da dire. |
| 9 | Also I said, The thing that ye do is not good: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the nations our enemies? | Io aggiunsi: Ciò che state facendo non è buono. Non dovreste invece camminare nel timore del nostro DIO per evitare l'oltraggio delle nazioni nostre nemiche? |
| 10 | And I likewise, my brethren and my servants, do lend them money and grain. I pray you, let us leave off this usury. | Anch'io, i miei fratelli e i miei servi abbiamo prestato loro denaro e grano. Vi prego, smettiamo di esigere l'interesse di questo! |
| 11 | Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their fields, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them. | Restituite loro oggi stesso i loro campi, le loro vigne, i loro uliveti e le loro case, e anche la centesima parte del denaro, del grano, del vino e dell'olio che avete loro richiesto. |
| 12 | Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do, even as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they would do according to this promise. | Essi risposero: Restituiremo e non richiederemo più nulla da loro, faremo come tu dici. Allora chiamai i sacerdoti e davanti a loro li feci giurare che avrebbero fatto secondo questa promessa. |
| 13 | Also I shook out my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labor, that performeth not this promise; even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the assembly said, Amen, and praised Jehovah. And the people did according to this promise. | Scossi quindi la piega del mio vestito e dissi: Così scuota DIO dalla sua casa e dai suoi beni chiunque non manterrà questa promessa! Così sia egli scosso e svuotato di tutto!. Tutta l'assemblea allora disse: Amen!, e lodarono l'Eterno. Il popolo fece secondo quella promessa. |
| 14 | Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, [that is], twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor. | Inoltre dal giorno in cui fui designato ad essere loro governatore nel paese di Giuda, dal ventesimo anno fino al trentaduesimo anno del re Artaserse, per dodici anni, io e i miei fratelli non mangiammo della provvigione del governatore. |
| 15 | But the former governors that were before me were chargeable unto the people, and took of them bread and wine, besides forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God. | Invece i passati governatori che mi avevano preceduto avevano gravato il popolo prendendo da esso pane e vino, oltre a quaranta sicli d'argento. Perfino i loro servi spadroneggiavano sul popolo; ma io non ho fatto così, perché ho avuto timore di DIO. |
| 16 | Yea, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work. | Anzi mi sono grandemente impegnato nel lavoro di riparazione di queste mura e non abbiamo comprato alcun terreno; inoltre tutti i miei servi si sono radunati là a lavorare. |
| 17 | Moreover there were at my table, of the Jews and the rulers, a hundred and fifty men, besides those that came unto us from among the nations that were round about us. | Avevo pure alla mia mensa centocinquanta Giudei e magistrati, oltre quelli che venivano a noi dalle nazioni circonvicine. |
| 18 | Now that which was prepared for one day was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this I demanded not the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people. | Ciò che veniva preparato ogni giorno era un bue e sei capi scelti presi dal gregge; per me venivano pure preparati uccelli, e ogni dieci giorni si forniva ogni sorta di vini in abbondanza; tuttavia, nonostante questo, non ho mai chiesto la provvigione del governatore, perché su questo popolo pesava già la servitù. |
| 19 | Remember unto me, O my God, for good, all that I have done for this people. | Ricordati di me, o mio DIO, per tutto il bene che ho fatto per questo popolo. |
