| 1 | Dès le matin les grands prêtres tinrent conseil avec les anciens et les scribes, tout le Sanhédrin; après avoir lié Jésus, ils l'emmenèrent et le remirent à Pilate. | And straightway in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes, and the whole council, held a consultation, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him up to Pilate. |
| 2 | Pilate l'interrogea : "Es-tu le roi des Juifs ?"Jésus lui répondit : "Tu le dis." | And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering saith unto him, Thou sayest. |
| 3 | Comme les grands prêtres portaient contre lui beaucoup d'accusations, | And the chief priests accused him of many things. |
| 4 | Pilate l'interrogea de nouveau, disant : "Tu ne réponds rien ?"Vois combien d'accusations ils portent contre toi." | And Pilate again asked him, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they accuse thee of. |
| 5 | Mais Jésus ne répondit plus rien, en sorte que Pilate était dans l'étonnement. | But Jesus no more answered anything; insomuch that Pilate marvelled. |
| 6 | Or, à chaque fête, il leur relâchait un prisonnier, celui qu'ils demandaient. | Now at the feast he used to release unto them one prisoner, whom they asked of him. |
| 7 | Il y avait dans la prison le nommé Barabbas, avec les séditieux, pour un meurtre qu'ils avaient commis dans la sédition. | And there was one called Barabbas, [lying] bound with them that had made insurrection, men who in the insurrection had committed murder. |
| 8 | La foule qui venait de monter se mit à réclamer ce qu'il leur accordait toujours. | And the multitude went up and began to ask him [to do] as he was wont to do unto them. |
| 9 | Pilate leur répondit : "Voulez-vous que je vous relâche le roi des Juifs ?" | And Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews? |
| 10 | Il savait, en effet, que c'était par jalousie que les grands prêtres l'avaient livré. | For he perceived that for envy the chief priests had delivered him up. |
| 11 | Mais les grands prêtres excitèrent la foule pour qu'il leur relâchât plutôt Barabbas. | But the chief priests stirred up the multitude, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them. |
| 12 | Pilate, reprenant la parole, leur dit : "Que ferai-je donc de celui que vous appelez le roi des Juifs ?" | And Pilate again answered and said unto them, What then shall I do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews? |
| 13 | Eux crièrent de nouveau : "Crucifiez-le ! " | And they cried out again, Crucify him. |
| 14 | Pilate leur dit : "Qu'a-t-il donc fait de mal ?"Et ils crièrent encore plus fort : "Crucifiez-le ! " | And Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out exceedingly, Crucify him. |
| 15 | Pilate, voulant donner satisfaction à la foule, leur relâcha Barabbas; et après avoir fait flageller Jésus, il le remit (aux soldats) pour être crucifié. | And Pilate, wishing to content the multitude, released unto them Barabbas, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified. |
| 16 | Les soldats l'emmenèrent à l'intérieur du palais, c'est-à-dire au prétoire, et ils convoquèrent toute la cohorte. | And the soldiers led him away within the court, which is the Praetorium; and they call together the whole band. |
| 17 | Ils le revêtirent de pourpre et le ceignirent d'une couronne d'épines qu'ils avaient tressée. | And they clothe him with purple, and platting a crown of thorns, they put it on him; |
| 18 | Et ils se mirent à le saluer : "Salut, roi des Juifs ! " | and they began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews! |
| 19 | Et ils lui frappaient la tête avec un roseau, et ils lui crachaient dessus et, se mettant à genoux, ils se prosternaient devant lui. | And they smote his head with a reed, and spat upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him. |
| 20 | Après s'être moqués de lui, ils lui retirèrent la pourpre, lui remirent ses vêtements et le firent sortir pour qu'on le crucifiât. | And when they had mocked him, they took off from him the purple, and put on him his garments. And they lead him out to crucify him. |
| 21 | Ils réquisitionnèrent un passant, Simon le Cyrénéen, le père d'Alexandre et de Rufus, qui revenait de la campagne, pour porter sa croix, | And they compel one passing by, Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to go [with them], that he might bear his cross. |
| 22 | et ils le menèrent au lieu (dit) Golgotha, ce qui se traduit : lieu du Crâne. | And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull. |
| 23 | Et ils lui donnèrent du vin mêlé de myrrhe, mais il n'en prit pas; | And they offered him wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not. |
| 24 | et ils le crucifièrent et se partagèrent ses vêtements, en les tirant au sort, à qui aurait quelque chose. | And they crucify him, and part his garments among them, casting lots upon them, what each should take. |
| 25 | Il était la troisième heure lorsqu'ils le crucifièrent. | And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. |
| 26 | L'inscription indiquant la cause (de sa condamnation) portait : "Le roi des Juifs." | And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS. |
| 27 | Ils crucifièrent avec lui deux brigands, l'un à sa droite, l'autre à sa gauche. | And with him they crucify two robbers; one on his right hand, and one on his left. |
| 28 | Ainsi fut accomplie cette parole de l'Ecriture : Et il a été compté parmi les malfaiteurs. | [And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was reckoned with transgressors.] |
| 29 | Les passants l'injuriaient en hochant la tête et disant : "Hé ! Toi qui détruis le sanctuaire et le rebâtis en trois jours, | And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ha! Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, |
| 30 | sauve-toi toi-même, et descends de la croix ! " | save thyself, and come down from the cross. |
| 31 | De même, les grands prêtres aussi, avec les scribes, se moquaient de lui entre eux et disaient : "Il en a sauvé d'autres, il ne peut se sauver lui-même. | In like manner also the chief priests mocking [him] among themselves with the scribes said, He saved others; himself he cannot save. |
| 32 | Que le Christ, le roi d'Israël, descende maintenant de la croix, afin que nous voyions et que nous croyions ! "Ceux même qui avaient été crucifiés avec lui l'insultaient. | Let the Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reproached him. |
| 33 | La sixième heure arrivée, il se fit des ténèbres sur la terre entière jusqu'à la neuvième heure. | And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. |
| 34 | Et à la neuvième, heure, Jésus cria d'une voix forte : "Eloï, Eloï, lama sabacthani, "ce qui se traduit : "Mon Dieu, mon Dieu, pourquoi m'avez-vous abandonné ?" | And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? |
| 35 | Quelques-uns de ceux qui étaient là, l'ayant entendu, disaient : "Voilà qu'il appelle Elie." | And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elijah. |
| 36 | Et quelqu'un courut imbiber une éponge de vinaigre, et l'ayant mise au bout d'un roseau, il lui présentait à boire, disant : "Laissez ! que nous voyions si Elie va venir le descendre." | And one ran, and filling a sponge full of vinegar, put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let be; let us see whether Elijah cometh to take him down. |
| 37 | Jésus jeta un grand cri et expira. | And Jesus uttered a loud voice, and gave up the ghost. |
| 38 | Et le voile du sanctuaire se fendit en deux, du haut en bas. | And the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom. |
| 39 | Le centurion qui se tenait en face de lui, ayant vu qu'il avait expiré ainsi, dit : "Vraiment cet homme était Fils de Dieu." | And when the centurion, who stood by over against him, saw that he so gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God. |
| 40 | Il y avait aussi des femmes qui regardaient à distance, entre autres Marie la Magdaléenne, Marie mère de Jacques le Petit et de José, et Salomé, | And there were also women beholding from afar: among whom [were] both Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome; |
| 41 | qui le suivaient et le servaient lorsqu'il était en Galilée, et beaucoup d'autres qui étaient montées à Jérusalem avec lui. | who, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him; and many other women that came up with him unto Jerusalem. |
| 42 | Le soir étant venu, comme c'était Préparation, c'est-à-dire veille du sabbat, | And when even was now come, because it was the Preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, |
| 43 | vint Joseph d'Arimathie, membre honoré du grand conseil, qui attendait, lui aussi, le royaume de Dieu. Il alla hardiment auprès de Pilate pour demander le corps de Jésus. | there came Joseph of Arimathaea, a councillor of honorable estate, who also himself was looking for the kingdom of God; and he boldly went in unto Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. |
| 44 | Mais Pilate s'étonna qu'il fût déjà mort, fit venir le centurion, et lui demanda s'il y avait longtemps qu'il était mort. | And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead. |
| 45 | Renseigné par le centurion, il accorda le cadavre à Joseph. | And when he learned it of the centurion, he granted the corpse to Joseph. |
| 46 | Ayant acheté un linceul, il le descendit, l'enveloppa dans le linceul, le déposa dans un sépulcre qui avait été taillé dans le roc, et il roula une pierre à l'entrée du sépulcre. | And he bought a linen cloth, and taking him down, wound him in the linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb which had been hewn out of a rock; and he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. |
| 47 | Or Marie la Magdaléenne et Marie, mère de José, observaient où il était déposé. | And Mary Magdalene and Mary the [mother] of Joses beheld where he was laid. |
