| 1 | Now after two days was [the feast of] the passover and the unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him with subtlety, and kill him: | Ora, due giorni dopo era la Pasqua e la festa degli Azzimi; e i capi dei sacerdoti e gli scribi cercavano il modo di prendere Gesù con inganno e ucciderlo. |
| 2 | for they said, Not during the feast, lest haply there shall be a tumult of the people. | Ma dicevano: Non durante la festa, perché non succeda un tumulto di popolo. |
| 3 | And while he was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster cruse of ointment of pure nard very costly; [and] she brake the cruse, and poured it over his head. | Ora egli, trovandosi a Betania in casa di Simone il lebbroso, mentre era a tavola, entrò una donna con un vaso di alabastro di olio profumato di autentico nardo, di grande valore; or ella, rotto il vaso di alabastro, glielo versò sul capo. |
| 4 | But there were some that had indignation among themselves, [saying], To what purpose hath this waste of the ointment been made? | Alcuni si sdegnarono fra di loro e dissero: Perché tutto questo spreco di olio? |
| 5 | For this ointment might have been sold for above three hundred shillings, and given to the poor. And they murmured against her. | Poiché si poteva vendere quest'olio per più di trecento denari e darli ai poveri. Ed erano indignati contro di lei. |
| 6 | But Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me. | Ma Gesù disse: Lasciatela fare; perché le date fastidio? Ella ha compiuto una buona opera verso di me. |
| 7 | For ye have the poor always with you, and whensoever ye will ye can do them good: but me ye have not always. | Perché i poveri li avrete sempre con voi; e quando volete, potete far loro del bene, ma non avrete sempre me. |
| 8 | She hath done what she could; she hath anointed my body beforehand for the burying. | Ella ha fatto ciò che poteva; ha unto in anticipo il mio corpo per la sepoltura. |
| 9 | And verily I say unto you, Wheresoever the gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, that also which this woman hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her. | Ma in verità vi dico che in tutto il mondo, ovunque sarà predicato questo evangelo, si racconterà pure in suo ricordo ciò che costei ha fatto. |
| 10 | And Judas Iscariot, he that was one of the twelve, went away unto the chief priests, that he might deliver him unto them. | Allora Giuda Iscariota, uno dei dodici, andò dai capi dei sacerdoti, per consegnarlo nelle loro mani. |
| 11 | And they, when they heard it, were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently deliver him [unto them]. | Ed essi, udito ciò, si rallegrarono e promisero di dargli del denaro. Così egli cercava un'occasione propizia per tradirlo. |
| 12 | And on the first day of unleavened bread, when they sacrificed the passover, his disciples say unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and make ready that thou mayest eat the passover? | Ora, nel primo giorno della festa degli Azzimi, quando si sacrificava la Pasqua, i suoi discepoli gli dissero: Dove vuoi che andiamo a prepararti da mangiare la Pasqua?. |
| 13 | And he sendeth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him; | Allora egli mandò due dei suoi discepoli, dicendo loro: Andate in città e incontrerete un uomo, che porta una brocca piena d'acqua; seguitelo. |
| 14 | and wheresoever he shall enter in, say to the master of the house, The Teacher saith, Where is my guest-chamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? | E là dove entrerà, dite al padron di casa: "Il Maestro chiede: Dov'è la stanza in cui mangerò la Pasqua con i miei discepoli?" |
| 15 | And he will himself show you a large upper room furnished [and] ready: and there make ready for us. | Egli allora vi mostrerà una grande sala di sopra arredata e pronta; là apparecchiate per noi. |
| 16 | And the disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover. | I suoi discepoli andarono e, giunti in città, trovarono come egli aveva loro detto; e apparecchiarono la Pasqua. |
| 17 | And when it was evening he cometh with the twelve. | Quando fu sera, egli giunse con i dodici. |
| 18 | And as they sat and were eating, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you shall betray me, [even] he that eateth with me. | E, mentre erano a tavola e mangiavano, Gesù disse: In verità vi dico che uno di voi, che mangia con me, mi tradirà. |
| 19 | They began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? | Allora essi cominciarono a rattristarsi e a dirgli uno dopo l'altro: Sono forse io?. E un altro disse: Sono forse io?. |
| 20 | And he said unto them, [It is] one of the twelve, he that dippeth with me in the dish. | Ed egli, rispondendo, disse loro: è uno dei dodici che intinge con me nel piatto. |
| 21 | For the Son of man goeth, even as it is written of him: but woe unto that man through whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had not been born. | Si, il Figlio dell'uomo se ne va come sta scritto di lui; ma guai a quell'uomo per mezzo del quale il Figlio dell'uomo è tradito. Sarebbe stato meglio per lui, se quell'uomo non fosse mai nato!. |
| 22 | And as they were eating, he took bread, and when he had blessed, he brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take ye: this is my body. | E mentre essi mangiavano, Gesù prese del pane e, dopo averlo benedetto lo spezzò e lo diede loro dicendo: Prendete, mangiate; questo è il mio corpo. |
| 23 | And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave to them: and they all drank of it. | Poi prese il calice e rese grazie, lo diede loro, e tutti ne bevvero. |
| 24 | And he said unto them, This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. | Quindi disse loro: Questo è il mio sangue, il sangue del nuovo patto, che è sparso per molti. |
| 25 | Verily I say unto you, I shall no more drink of the fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God. | In verità vi dico che non berrò più del frutto della vigna fino al giorno in cui lo berrò nuovo nel regno di Dio. |
| 26 | And when they had sung a hymn, they went out unto the mount of Olives. | E, dopo aver cantato un inno, uscirono, dirigendosi verso il monte degli Ulivi. |
| 27 | And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered abroad. | E Gesù disse loro: Voi tutti sarete scandalizzati di me questa notte, perché sta scritto: "Percuoterò il Pastore e le pecore saranno disperse". |
| 28 | Howbeit, after I am raised up, I will go before you into Galilee. | Ma dopo che sarò risuscitato, io vi precederò in Galilea. |
| 29 | But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I. | E Pietro gli disse: Anche se tutti gli altri si scandalizzassero di te, io non mi scandalizzerò. |
| 30 | And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, that thou to-day, [even] this night, before the cock crow twice, shalt deny me thrice. | E Gesù gli disse: In verità ti dico che oggi, in questa stessa notte, prima che il gallo canti due volte, mi rinnegherai tre volte. |
| 31 | But he spake exceedingly vehemently, If I must die with thee, I will not deny thee. And in like manner also said they all. | Ma egli con più fermezza diceva: Anche se dovessi morire con te, non ti rinnegherò affatto. Lo stesso dicevano pure tutti gli altri. |
| 32 | And they come unto a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith unto his disciples, Sit ye here, while I pray. | Poi essi arrivarono ad un luogo chiamato Getsemani, ed egli disse ai suoi discepoli: Sedete qui, finché io abbia pregato. |
| 33 | And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly amazed, and sore troubled. | Quindi prese con sé Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni, e cominciò ad essere preso da timore e angoscia; |
| 34 | And he saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful even unto death: abide ye here, and watch. | e disse loro: L'anima mia è grandemente rattristata, fino alla morte, rimanete qui e vegliate. |
| 35 | And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass away from him. | E, andato un poco avanti, si gettò a terra e pregava che, se fosse possibile, si allontanasse da lui quell'ora. |
| 36 | And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; remove this cup from me: howbeit not what I will, but what thou wilt. | E disse: Abba, Padre, ogni cosa ti è possibile; allontana da me questo calice! Però non ciò che io voglio, ma ciò che tu vuoi. |
| 37 | And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest thou not watch one hour? | Quindi, tornato indietro, trovò i discepoli che dormivano e disse a Pietro: Simone, dormi? Non hai avuto la forza di vegliare una sola ora? |
| 38 | Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. | Vegliate e pregate per non entrare in tentazione, certo lo spirito è pronto, ma la carne è debole. |
| 39 | And again he went away, and prayed, saying the same words. | Se ne andò di nuovo e pregò, dicendo le medesime parole. |
| 40 | And again he came, and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they knew not what to answer him. | Ritornato, trovò i discepoli nuovamente addormentati, perché i loro occhi erano appesantiti e non sapevano che cosa rispondergli. |
| 41 | And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough; the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. | Infine, ritornò per la terza volta e disse loro: Dormite pure ora e riposatevi, basta! L'ora è giunta. Ecco, il Figlio dell'uomo è consegnato nelle mani dei peccatori. |
| 42 | Arise, let us be going: behold, he that betrayeth me is at hand. | Alzatevi, andiamo; ecco, colui che mi tradisce è vicino. |
| 43 | And straightway, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. | E in quell'istante, mentre egli parlava ancora, giunse Giuda, uno dei dodici, e con lui una gran turba con spade e bastoni, mandata dai capi dei sacerdoti dagli scribi e dagli anziani. |
| 44 | Now he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that is he; take him, and lead him away safely. | Or chi lo tradiva aveva dato loro un segnale, dicendo: Quello che bacerò è lui. Pigliatelo e conducetelo via sotto buona scorta. |
| 45 | And when he was come, straightway he came to him, and saith, Rabbi; and kissed him. | E, come fu giunto, subito si accostò a lui e disse: Rabbi, Rabbi; e lo baciò caldamente! |
| 46 | And they laid hands on him, and took him. | Essi allora gli misero le mani addosso e lo arrestarono. |
| 47 | But a certain one of them that stood by drew his sword, and smote the servant of the high priest, and struck off his ear. | E uno dei presenti trasse la spada, percosse il servo del sommo sacerdote e gli recise un orecchio. |
| 48 | And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a robber, with swords and staves to seize me? | Allora Gesù, rispondendo. disse: Siete venuti con spade e bastoni per catturarmi, come se fossi un brigante? |
| 49 | I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but [this is done] that the scriptures might be fulfilled. | Eppure, ogni giorno ero in mezzo a voi nel tempio ad insegnare, e voi non mi avete preso; ma questo è avvenuto perché si adempissero le Scritture!. |
| 50 | And they all left him, and fled. | Allora i discepoli, abbandonatolo, se ne fuggirono tutti. |
| 51 | And a certain young man followed with him, having a linen cloth cast about him, over [his] naked [body]: and they lay hold on him; | Ed un certo giovane lo seguiva, avvolto in un lenzuolo sul corpo nudo, ed essi lo afferrarono. |
| 52 | but he left the linen cloth, and fled naked. | Ma egli, lasciato il lenzuolo. se ne fuggì nudo dalle loro mani. |
| 53 | And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and there come together with him all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes. | Essi allora condussero Gesù dal sommo sacerdote, presso il quale si radunarono tutti i capi dei sacerdoti, gli anziani e gli scribi. |
| 54 | And Peter had followed him afar off, even within, into the court of the high priest; and he was sitting with the officers, and warming himself in the light [of the fire]. | E Pietro lo seguì da lontano fin dentro il cortile del sommo sacerdote, dove si mise a sedere con le guardie, scaldandosi vicino al fuoco. |
| 55 | Now the chief priests and the whole council sought witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found it not. | Ora i capi dei sacerdoti e tutto il sinedrio, cercavano qualche testimonianza contro Gesù, per farlo morire; ma non ne trovavano. |
| 56 | For many bare false witness against him, and their witness agreed not together. | Molti infatti deponevano il falso contro di lui; ma le loro testimonianze non erano concordi. |
| 57 | And there stood up certain, and bare false witness against him, saying, | Allora alcuni, alzatisi, testimoniarono il falso contro di lui, dicendo: |
| 58 | We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands. | Noi l'abbiamo udito dire: "Io distruggerò questo tempio fatto da mani, e in tre giorni ne edificherò un altro non fatto da mani". |
| 59 | And not even so did their witness agree together. | Ma neppure su questo la loro testimonianza era concorde. |
| 60 | And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee? | Allora il sommo sacerdote, alzatosi in mezzo all'assemblea, interrogò Gesù, dicendo: Non rispondi nulla? Che cosa testimoniano costoro contro di te?. |
| 61 | But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and saith unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? | Ma egli tacque e non rispose nulla. Di nuovo, il sommo sacerdote lo interrogò e gli disse: Sei tu il Cristo, il Figlio del Benedetto?. |
| 62 | And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven. | E Gesù disse: Sì, io lo sono. E voi vedrete il Figlio dell'uomo sedere alla destra della Potenza e venire con le nuvole del cielo. |
| 63 | And the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What further need have we of witnesses? | Allora il sommo sacerdote, stracciandosi le vesti, disse: Che bisogno abbiamo ancora di testimoni? |
| 64 | Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be worthy of death. | Avete udito la bestemmia; che ve ne pare?. E tutti lo giudicarono reo di morte. |
| 65 | And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the officers received him with blows of their hands. | Allora alcuni cominciarono a sputargli addosso, a bendargli il viso, a dargli degli schiaffi ed a dirgli: Indovina. E le guardie lo percuotevano. |
| 66 | And as Peter was beneath in the court, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest; | Or mentre Pietro era giù nel cortile, sopraggiunse una serva del sommo sacerdote. |
| 67 | and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and saith, Thou also wast with the Nazarene, [even] Jesus. | E, visto Pietro che si scaldava, lo guardò attentamente e disse: Anche tu eri con Gesù Nazareno. |
| 68 | But he denied, saying, I neither know, nor understand what thou sayest: and he went out into the porch; and the cock crew. | Ma egli negò dicendo: Non lo conosco e non capisco ciò che dici. Uscì quindi fuori nel vestibolo, e il gallo cantò. |
| 69 | And the maid saw him, and began again to say to them that stood by, This is [one] of them. | Or la serva, vedutolo di nuovo, cominciò a dire ai presenti: Costui è uno di loro. |
| 70 | But he again denied it. And after a little while again they that stood by said to Peter, of a truth thou art [one] of them; for thou art a Galilaean. | Ma egli negò ancora. E, poco dopo, i presenti dissero di nuovo a Pietro: Veramente tu sei uno di loro; infatti sei Galileo e il tuo parlare lo rivela. |
| 71 | But he began to curse, and to swear, I know not this man of whom ye speak. | Ma egli cominciò a maledire e a giurare: Io non conosco quest'uomo di cui parlate. |
| 72 | And straightway the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word, how that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept. | E il gallo cantò per la seconda volta; allora Pietro si ricordò della parola che Gesù gli aveva detta: Prima che il gallo canti due volte, mi rinnegherai tre volte. E, pensando a ciò, scoppiò a piangere. |
