| 2 | a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, as the dawn spread upon the mountains; a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after them, even to the years of many generations. | giorno di tenebre e di densa oscurità, giorno di nubi e di caligine. Come l'alba si estende sui monti, viene un popolo numeroso e potente, simile al quale non ci fu mai alcuno prima, né mai più ce ne sarà per molte generazioni future. |
| 3 | A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and none hath escaped them. | Davanti a lui un fuoco divora e dietro a lui brucia una fiamma. Davanti a lui il paese è come il giardino dell'Eden; e dietro a lui è un deserto desolato; sì, nulla gli sfugge. |
| 4 | The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so do they run. | Il loro aspetto è come l'aspetto di cavalli, e corrono come veloci destrieri. |
| 5 | Like the noise of chariots on the tops of the mountains do they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array. | Essi balzano sulle cime dei monti con un fragore di carri, come il crepitio di una fiamma di fuoco che divora la stoppia, come un popolo forte schierato in battaglia. |
| 6 | At their presence the peoples are in anguish; all faces are waxed pale. | Davanti a loro i popoli si contorcono per il dolore, ogni volto impallidisce. |
| 7 | They run like mighty men; they climb the wall like men of war; and they march every one on his ways, and they break not their ranks. | Corrono come uomini valorosi, salgono sulle mura come uomini di guerra; ognuno procede per la sua strada senza deviare dal suo cammino. |
| 8 | Neither doth one thrust another; they march every one in his path; and they burst through the weapons, and break not off [their course]. | Nessuno spinge il suo vicino, ognuno procede per il suo sentiero, si slanciano in mezzo ai dardi, ma non sono feriti. |
| 9 | They leap upon the city; they run upon the wall; they climb up into the houses; they enter in at the windows like a thief. | Scorazzano per la città, corrono sulle mura, salgono sulle case, entrano dalle finestre come un ladro. |
| 10 | The earth quaketh before them; the heavens tremble; the sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining. | Davanti a loro trema la terra, i cieli tremano, il sole e la luna si oscurano e le stelle ritirano il loro splendore. |
| 11 | And Jehovah uttereth his voice before his army; for his camp is very great; for he is strong that executeth his word; for the day of Jehovah is great and very terrible; and who can abide it? | L'Eterno fa udire la sua voce davanti al suo esercito, perché il suo campo è molto grande e potente l'esecutore della sua parola. Sì, il giorno dell'Eterno è grande e assai terribile; chi potrà sostenerlo? |
| 12 | Yet even now, saith Jehovah, turn ye unto me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: | Perciò ora, dice l'Eterno, tornate a me con tutto il vostro cuore, con digiuni, con pianti e con lamenti. |
| 13 | and rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto Jehovah your God; for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness, and repenteth him of the evil. | Stracciate il vostro cuore e non le vostre vesti e tornate all'Eterno, il vostro DIO, perché egli è misericordioso e pieno di compassione, lento all'ira e di grande benignità, e si pente del male mandato. |
| 14 | Who knoweth whether he will not turn and repent, and leave a blessing behind him, even a meal-offering and a drink-offering unto Jehovah your God? | Chi sa che non si volga e si penta, e lasci dietro a sé una benedizione, un'offerta di cibo e una libazione per l'Eterno, il vostro DIO? |
| 15 | Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly; | Suonate la tromba in Sion, proclamate un digiuno, convocate una solenne assemblea. |
| 16 | gather the people, sanctify the assembly, assemble the old men, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts; let the bridegroom go forth from his chamber, and the bride out of her closet. | Radunate il popolo, santificate l'assemblea, riunite i vecchi, radunate i fanciulli e quelli che succhiano al seno. Esca lo sposo dalla sua camera e la sposa dalla sua camera nuziale. |
| 17 | Let the priests, the ministers of Jehovah, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O Jehovah, and give not thy heritage to reproach, that the nations should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the peoples, Where is their God? | Fra il portico e l'altare, piangano i sacerdoti, i ministri dell'Eterno, e dicano: Risparmia, o Eterno, il tuo popolo e non dare la tua eredità al vituperio o ad essere dominata dalle nazioni. Perché si direbbe fra i popoli: "Dov'è il loro DIO?". |
| 18 | Then was Jehovah jealous for his land, and had pity on his people. | Allora l'Eterno si è mosso a gelosia per il suo paese e ha avuto compassione del suo popolo. |
| 19 | And Jehovah answered and said unto his people, Behold, I will send you grain, and new wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith; and I will no more make you a reproach among the nations; | L'Eterno risponderà e dirà al suo popolo: Ecco, io vi manderò grano, mosto e olio e ne avrete a sazietà e non vi renderò più il vituperio delle nazioni. |
| 20 | but I will remove far off from you the northern [army], and will drive it into a land barren and desolate, its forepart into the eastern sea, and its hinder part into the western sea; and its stench shall come up, and its ill savor shall come up, because it hath done great things. | Allontanerò da voi l'esercito del nord e lo guiderò in una terra arida e desolata: la sua avanguardia verso il mare orientale e la sua retroguardia verso il mare occidentale, il suo puzzo salirà il suo fetore si leverà, perché ha fatto cose grandi. |
| 21 | Fear not, O land, be glad and rejoice; for Jehovah hath done great things. | Non temere, o suolo, gioisci rallegrati, perché l'Eterno ha fatto cose grandi. |
| 22 | Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field; for the pastures of the wilderness do spring, for the tree beareth its fruit, the fig-tree and the vine do yield their strength. | Non temete, o bestie dei campi, perché i terreni da pascolo, sono rinverditi gli alberi portano il loro frutto il fico e la vite danno tutta la loro ricchezza. |
| 23 | Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in Jehovah your God; for he giveth you the former rain in just measure, and he causeth to come down for you the rain, the former rain and the latter rain, in the first [month]. | Gioite quindi, o figli di Sion, e rallegratevi nell'Eterno, il vostro DIO, perché vi ha dato la prima pioggia, secondo giustizia e farà cadere per voi la pioggia, la prima pioggia e l'ultima pioggia nel primo mese. |
| 24 | And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil. | Le aie saranno piene di grano e i tini traboccheranno di mosto e di olio |
| 25 | And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the canker-worm, and the caterpillar, and the palmer-worm, my great army which I sent among you. | così vi compenserò delle annate che hanno divorato la cavalletta, la larva della cavalletta la locusta e il bruco, il mio grande esercito che avevo mandato contro di voi. |
| 26 | And ye shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and shall praise the name of Jehovah your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you; and my people shall never be put to shame. | E voi mangerete in abbondanza e sarete saziati, e loderete il nome dell'Eterno, il vostro DIO, che per voi ha fatto meraviglie, e il mio popolo non sarà mai più coperto di vergogna. |
| 27 | And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am Jehovah your God, and there is none else; and my people shall never be put to shame. | Allora voi riconoscerete che io sono in mezzo ad Israele e che sono l'Eterno, il vostro DIO, e non ce n'è alcun altro; il mio popolo non sarà mai più coperto di vergogna. |
| 28 | And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: | Dopo questo avverrà che io spanderò il mio Spirito sopra ogni carne, i vostri figli e le vostre figlie profetizzeranno, i vostri vecchi faranno sogni, i vostri giovani avranno visioni. |
| 29 | and also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my Spirit. | In quei giorni spanderò il mio Spirito anche sui servi e sulle serve. |
| 30 | And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. | Farò prodigi nei cieli e sulla terra: sangue fuoco e colonne di fumo. |
| 31 | The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of Jehovah cometh. | Il sole sarà mutato in tenebre e la luna in sangue, prima che venga il grande e terribile giorno dell'Eterno. |
| 32 | And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of Jehovah shall be delivered; for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those that escape, as Jehovah hath said, and among the remnant those whom Jehovah doth call. | E avverrà che chiunque invocherà il nome dell'Eterno sarà salvato, perché sul monte Sion e in Gerusalemme vi sarà salvezza, come ha detto l'Eterno, e fra i superstiti che l'Eterno chiamerà. |
