| 1 | Éliphaz de Théman prit la parole et dit : | Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said, | Allora Elifaz di Teman rispose e disse: |
| 2 | Un homme peut-il être utile à Dieu ? Non ; le sage n'est utile qu'à lui-même. | Can a man be profitable unto God? Surely he that is wise is profitable unto himself. | Può forse l'Uomo recare qualche beneficio a Dio? Certamente il saggio reca beneficio a se stesso. |
| 3 | Si tu es juste, est-ce à l'avantage du Tout Puissant ? Si tu es intègre dans tes voies, qu'y gagne-t-il ? | Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? Or is it gain [to him], that thou makest thy ways perfect? | Quale piacere ne riceve l'Onnipotente, se tu sei giusto, o quale guadagno ne ha, se la tua condotta è integra? |
| 4 | Est-ce par crainte de toi qu'il te châtie, Qu'il entre en jugement avec toi ? | Is it for thy fear [of him] that he reproveth thee, That he entereth with thee into judgment? | E' forse per la paura che ha di te che ti castiga e viene in giudizio con te? |
| 5 | Ta méchanceté n'est-elle pas grande ? Tes iniquités ne sont-elles pas infinies ? | Is not thy wickedness great? Neither is there any end to thine iniquities. | Non è piuttosto per la tua grande malvagità e per le tue innumerevoli colpe? |
| 6 | Tu enlevais sans motif des gages à tes frères, Tu privais de leurs vêtements ceux qui étaient nus ; | For thou hast taken pledges of thy brother for nought, And stripped the naked of their clothing. | Senza motivo infatti prendevi pegni dai tuoi fratelli e spogliavi gli ignudi delle loro vesti. |
| 7 | Tu ne donnais point d'eau à l'homme altéré, Tu refusais du pain à l'homme affamé. | Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, And thou hast withholden bread from the hungry. | Non davi da bere acqua allo stanco e rifiutavi il pane all'affamato. |
| 8 | Le pays était au plus fort, Et le puissant s'y établissait. | But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; And the honorable man, he dwelt in it. | La terra apparteneva all'uomo potente e vi abitava l'uomo onorato. |
| 9 | Tu renvoyais les veuves à vide ; Les bras des orphelins étaient brisés. | Thou hast sent widows away empty, And the arms of the fatherless have been broken. | Rimandavi la vedova a mani vuote, e le braccia degli orfani erano spezzate. |
| 10 | C'est pour cela que tu es entouré de pièges, Et que la terreur t'a saisi tout à coup. | Therefore snares are round about thee, And sudden fear troubleth thee, | Ecco perché sei circondato ovunque da lacci e spaventi improvvisi ti turbano, |
| 11 | Ne vois-tu donc pas ces ténèbres, Ces eaux débordées qui t'envahissent ? | Or darkness, so that thou canst not see, And abundance of waters cover thee. | oppure un'oscurità non ti permette di vedere e una piena di acque ti sommerge. |
| 12 | Dieu n'est-il pas en haut dans les cieux ? Regarde le sommet des étoiles, comme il est élevé ! | Is not God in the height of heaven? And behold the height of the stars, how high they are! | Non è forse Dio nell'alto dei cieli? Guarda le stelle eccelse, quanto sono alte! |
| 13 | Et tu dis : Qu'est-ce que Dieu sait ? Peut-il juger à travers l'obscurité ? | And thou sayest, What doth God know? Can he judge through the thick darkness? | E tu dici: che cosa sa Dio? Può forse giudicare attraverso dense tenebre? |
| 14 | Les nuées l'enveloppent, et il ne voit rien ; Il ne parcourt que la voûte des cieux. | Thick clouds are a covering to him, so that he seeth not; And he walketh on the vault of heaven. | Fitte nubi lo coprono così non può vedere, e passeggia sulla volta dei cieli. |
| 15 | Eh quoi ! tu voudrais prendre l'ancienne route Qu'ont suivie les hommes d'iniquité ? | Wilt thou keep the old way Which wicked men have trodden? | Vuoi tu seguire la via antica già percorsa da uomini malvagi, |
| 16 | Ils ont été emportés avant le temps, Ils ont eu la durée d'un torrent qui s'écoule. | Who were snatched away before their time, Whose foundation was poured out as a stream, | che furono portati via prima del tempo, e il cui fondamento fu spazzato via da un fiume, in piena? |
| 17 | Ils disaient à Dieu : Retire-toi de nous ; Que peut faire pour nous le Tout Puissant ? | Who said unto God, Depart from us; And, What can the Almighty do for us? | Essi dicevano a Dio: Allontanati da noi! Che cosa ci può fare l'Onnipotente? |
| 18 | Dieu cependant avait rempli de biens leurs maisons. -Loin de moi le conseil des méchants ! | Yet he filled their houses with good things: But the counsel of the wicked is far from me. | Eppure Dio aveva colmato le loro case di beni. Ma io mi tengo lontano dal consiglio degli empi. |
| 19 | Les justes, témoins de leur chute, se réjouiront, Et l'innocent se moquera d'eux : | The righteous see it, and are glad; And the innocent laugh them to scorn, | I giusti vedono ciò e si rallegrano, e l'innocente si fa beffe di loro: |
| 20 | Voilà nos adversaires anéantis ! Voilà leurs richesses dévorées par le feu ! | [Saying], Surely they that did rise up against us are cut off, And the remnant of them the fire hath consumed. | sì certo, i nostri nemici sono distrutti, e il fuoco ne divora quel che resta. |
| 21 | Attache-toi donc à Dieu, et tu auras la paix ; Tu jouiras ainsi du bonheur. | Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: Thereby good shall come unto thee. | Riconciliati dunque con Dio e sarai al sicuro; così avrai benessere. |
| 22 | Reçois de sa bouche l'instruction, Et mets dans ton coeur ses paroles. | Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, And lay up his words in thy heart. | Ricevi istruzioni dalla sua bocca e riponi le sue parole nel tuo cuore. |
| 23 | Tu seras rétabli, si tu reviens au Tout Puissant, Si tu éloignes l'iniquité de ta tente. | If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, If thou put away unrighteousness far from thy tents. | Se ritorni all'Onnipotente, sarai ristabilito; se allontani dalle tue tende l'iniquità |
| 24 | Jette l'or dans la poussière, L'or d'Ophir parmi les cailloux des torrents ; | And lay thou [thy] treasure in the dust, And [the gold of] Ophir among the stones of the brooks; | e getti l'oro nella polvere e l'oro d'Ofir tra i sassi del torrente, |
| 25 | Et le Tout Puissant sera ton or, Ton argent, ta richesse. | And the Almighty will be thy treasure, And precious silver unto thee. | allora l'Onnipotente sarà il tuo oro, il tuo tesoro d'argento. |
| 26 | Alors tu feras du Tout Puissant tes délices, Tu élèveras vers Dieu ta face ; | For then shalt thou delight thyself in the Almighty, And shalt lift up thy face unto God. | Poiché allora troverai il tuo diletto nell'Onnipotente e alzerai la faccia verso Dio. |
| 27 | Tu le prieras, et il t'exaucera, Et tu accompliras tes voeux. | Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he will hear thee; And thou shalt pay thy vows. | Lo pregherai ed egli ti esaudirà, e tu adempirai i tuoi voti. |
| 28 | A tes résolutions répondra le succès ; Sur tes sentiers brillera la lumière. | Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; And light shall shine upon thy ways. | Deciderai una cosa e ti riuscirà, e sul tuo cammino splenderà la luce. |
| 29 | Vienne l'humiliation, tu prieras pour ton relèvement : Dieu secourt celui dont le regard est abattu. | When they cast [thee] down, thou shalt say, [There is] lifting up; And the humble person he will save. | Quando ti umiliano, dirai: "L'innalzamento verrà". Egli soccorrerà l'umile |
| 30 | Il délivrera même le coupable, Qui devra son salut à la pureté de tes mains. | He will deliver [even] him that is not innocent: Yea, he shall be delivered through the cleanness of thy hands. | e libererà anche chi non è innocente sì, egli sarà liberato per la purità delle tue mani. |
