| 1 | And after these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Judaea, because the Jews sought to kill him. | Dopo queste cose, Gesù andava in giro per la Galilea, perché non voleva andare per la Giudea, perché i Giudei cercavano di ucciderlo. |
| 2 | Now the feast of the Jews, the feast of tabernacles, was at hand. | Ora la festa dei Giudei, quella dei Tabernacoli, era vicina. |
| 3 | His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may behold thy works which thou doest. | Per cui i suoi fratelli gli dissero: Parti di qui e va' in Giudea, affinché anche i tuoi discepoli vedano le opere che tu fai. |
| 4 | For no man doeth anything in secret, and himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou doest these things, manifest thyself to the world. | Nessuno infatti fa alcuna cosa in segreto, quando cerca di essere riconosciuto pubblicamente, se tu fai tali cose, palesati al mondo. |
| 5 | For even his brethren did not believe on him. | Neppure i suoi fratelli infatti credevano in lui. |
| 6 | Jesus therefore saith unto them, My time is not yet come; but your time is always ready. | Allora Gesù disse loro: Il mio tempo non è ancora venuto; il vostro tempo invece è sempre pronto. |
| 7 | The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that its works are evil. | Il mondo non può odiare voi, ma odia me perché io testimonio di lui, che le sue opere sono malvagie. |
| 8 | Go ye up unto the feast: I go not up unto this feast; because my time is not yet fulfilled. | Salite voi a questa festa, io non vi salgo ancora, perché il mio tempo non è ancora compiuto. |
| 9 | And having said these things unto them, he abode [still] in Galilee. | E, dette loro tali cose, rimase in Galilea. |
| 10 | But when his brethren were gone up unto the feast, then went he also up, not publicly, but as it were in secret. | Dopo che i suoi fratelli furono saliti alla festa, allora anche lui vi salì, non pubblicamente, ma come di nascosto. |
| 11 | The Jews therefore sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he? | I Giudei dunque lo cercavano durante la festa e dicevano: Dov'è quel tale?. |
| 12 | And there was much murmuring among the multitudes concerning him: some said, He is a good man; others said, Not so, but he leadeth the multitude astray. | Fra le folle si faceva un gran parlottare intorno a lui; gli uni dicevano: Egli è un uomo dabbene!. Altri dicevano: No, anzi egli inganna la folla. |
| 13 | Yet no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews. | Nessuno però parlava di lui apertamente, per timore dei Giudei. |
| 14 | But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. | Ma, verso la metà della festa, Gesù salì al tempio e incominciò a insegnare. |
| 15 | The Jews therefore marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned? | E i Giudei si meravigliavano e dicevano: Come mai costui sa di lettere, senza aver fatto studi?. |
| 16 | Jesus therefore answered them and said, My teaching is not mine, but his that sent me. | Gesù allora rispose loro e disse: La mia dottrina non è mia, ma di colui che mi ha mandato. |
| 17 | If any man willeth to do his will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is of God, or [whether] I speak from myself. | Se qualcuno vuol fare la sua volontà, conoscerà se questa dottrina viene da Dio, oppure se io parlo da me stesso. |
| 18 | He that speaketh from himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. | Chi parla da se stesso cerca la sua propria gloria, ma chi cerca la gloria di colui che l'ha mandato è verace, e in lui non vi è ingiustizia. |
| 19 | Did not Moses give you the law, and [yet] none of you doeth the law? Why seek ye to kill me? | Non vi ha Mosè dato la legge? Eppure nessuno di voi mette in pratica la legge. Perché cercate di uccidermi?. |
| 20 | The multitude answered, Thou hast a demon: who seeketh to kill thee? | La folla rispose e disse: Tu hai un demone; chi cerca di ucciderti?. |
| 21 | Jesus answered and said unto them, I did one work, and ye all marvel because thereof. | Gesù replicò e disse loro: Io ho fatto un'opera e ne siete tutti meravigliati. |
| 22 | Moses hath given you circumcision (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers); and on the sabbath ye circumcise a man. | Ora Mosè vi ha dato la circoncisione, (non già che essa provenga da Mosè, ma dai padri); e voi circoncidete un uomo di sabato. |
| 23 | If a man receiveth circumcision on the sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be broken; are ye wroth with me, because I made a man every whit whole on the sabbath? | Se un uomo riceve la circoncisione di sabato, affinché la legge di Mosè non sia violata, vi adirate voi contro di me perché ho guarito interamente un uomo di sabato? |
| 24 | Judge not according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment. | Non giudicate secondo l'apparenza ma giudicate secondo giustizia. |
| 25 | Some therefore of them of Jerusalem said, Is not this he whom they seek to kill? | Allora alcuni di Gerusalemme dicevano: Non è questi colui che cercano di uccidere? |
| 26 | And lo, he speaketh openly, and they say nothing unto him. Can it be that the rulers indeed know that this is the Christ? | Eppure, ecco, egli parla liberamente e non gli dicono nulla; hanno i capi riconosciuto davvero che egli è il Cristo? |
| 27 | Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when the Christ cometh, no one knoweth whence he is. | Ma noi sappiamo di dove sia costui; invece quando il Cristo verrà, nessuno saprà di dove egli sia. |
| 28 | Jesus therefore cried in the temple, teaching and saying, Ye both know me, and know whence I am; and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not. | Allora Gesù, insegnando nel tempio, esclamò e disse: Voi mi conoscete e sapete da dove sono; tuttavia io non sono venuto da me stesso, ma colui che mi ha mandato è verace e voi non lo conoscete. |
| 29 | I know him; because I am from him, and he sent me. | Io però lo conosco, perché vengo da lui ed è stato lui a mandarmi. |
| 30 | They sought therefore to take him: and no man laid his hand on him, because his hour was not yet come. | Perciò cercavano di prenderlo, ma nessuno gli mise le mani addosso, perché la sua ora non era ancora venuta. |
| 31 | But of the multitude many believed on him; and they said, When the Christ shall come, will he do more signs than those which this man hath done? | Ma molti della folla credettero in lui e dicevano: Il Cristo, quando verrà, farà più segni di quanti ne abbia fatti costui?. |
| 32 | The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things concerning him; and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to take him. | I farisei udirono che la folla sussurrava queste cose a suo riguardo; perciò i farisei e i capi dei sacerdoti mandarono delle guardie per prenderlo. |
| 33 | Jesus therefore said, Yet a little while am I with you, and I go unto him that sent me. | Allora Gesù disse loro: Io sono con voi ancora per poco tempo; poi me ne andrò da colui che mi ha mandato. |
| 34 | Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, ye cannot come. | Voi mi cercherete e non mi troverete; e dove sarò io, voi non potete venire. |
| 35 | The Jews therefore said among themselves, Whither will this man go that we shall not find him? will he go unto the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks? | Dicevano perciò i Giudei tra loro: Dove sta egli per andare che noi non lo troveremo? Andrà forse da quelli che sono dispersi fra i Greci, e ad insegnare ai Greci? |
| 36 | What is this word that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me; and where I am, ye cannot come? | Cosa voleva dire quando disse: "Voi mi cercherete e non mi troverete"; e: "Dove sarò io, voi non potete venire"?. |
| 37 | Now on the last day, the great [day] of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink. | Or nell'ultimo giorno, il grande giorno della festa, Gesù si alzò in piedi ed esclamò dicendo: Se qualcuno ha sete, venga a me e beva. |
| 38 | He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, from within him shall flow rivers of living water. | Chi crede in me, come ha detto la Scrittura, da dentro di lui sgorgheranno fiumi d'acqua viva. |
| 39 | But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believed on him were to receive: for the Spirit was not yet [given]; because Jesus was not yet glorified. | Or egli disse questo dello Spirito, che avrebbero ricevuto coloro che avrebbero creduto in lui; lo Spirito Santo infatti non era ancora stato dato, perché Gesù non era stato ancora glorificato. |
| 40 | [Some] of the multitude therefore, when they heard these words, said, This is of a truth the prophet. | Molti dunque della folla, udite queste parole, dicevano: Costui è veramente il profeta. |
| 41 | Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, What, doth the Christ come out of Galilee? | Altri dicevano: Costui è il Cristo. Alcuni invece dicevano: Viene forse il Cristo dalla Galilea? |
| 42 | Hath not the scripture said that the Christ cometh of the seed of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was? | Non dice la Scrittura che il Cristo viene dalla progenie di Davide e da Betlemme, villaggio dove viveva Davide?. |
| 43 | So there arose a division in the multitude because of him. | Ci fu dunque dissenso fra la folla a motivo di lui. |
| 44 | And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him. | E alcuni di loro lo volevano prendere, ma nessuno gli mise le mani addosso. |
| 45 | The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why did ye not bring him? | Le guardie tornarono quindi dai capi dei sacerdoti e dai farisei, e questi dissero loro: Perché non l'avete portato?. |
| 46 | The officers answered, Never man so spake. | Le guardie risposero: Nessun uomo ha mai parlato come costui. |
| 47 | The Pharisees therefore answered them, Are ye also led astray? | Perciò i farisei risposero loro: Siete stati sedotti anche voi? |
| 48 | Hath any of the rulers believed on him, or of the Pharisees? | Ha qualcuno dei capi o dei farisei creduto in lui? |
| 49 | But this multitude that knoweth not the law are accursed. | Ma questa plebaglia, che non conosce la legge, è maledetta. |
| 50 | Nicodemus saith unto them (he that came to him before, being one of them), | Nicodemo, uno di loro, colui che era andato da Gesù di notte, disse loro: |
| 51 | Doth our law judge a man, except it first hear from himself and know what he doeth? | La nostra legge condanna forse un uomo prima di averlo ascoltato e di sapere ciò che egli ha fatto?. |
| 52 | They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and see that out of Galilee ariseth no prophet. | Essi risposero e gli dissero: Sei forse anche tu Galileo? Ricerca le Scritture e vedrai che dalla Galilea non sorse mai alcun profeta. |
| 53 | And they went every man unto his own house: | E ciascuno se ne tornò a casa sua. |
