| 4 | Un temps de pleurer, et un temps de rire; un temps de lamenter, et un temps de sauter de joie; | a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; |
| 5 | Un temps de jeter des pierres, et un temps de les ramasser; un temps d'embrasser, et un temps de s'éloigner des embrassements; | a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; |
| 6 | Un temps de chercher, et un temps de laisser perdre; un temps de garder, et un temps de rejeter; | a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; |
| 7 | Un temps de déchirer, et un temps de coudre; un temps de se taire, et un temps de parler; | a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; |
| 8 | Un temps d'aimer, et un temps de haïr; un temps de guerre, et un temps de paix. | a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. |
| 9 | Quel avantage a celui qui travaille, de ce en quoi il se travaille? | What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboreth? |
| 10 | J'ai considéré cette occupation que Dieu a donnée aux hommes pour s'y appliquer. | I have seen the travail which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised therewith. |
| 11 | Il a fait que toutes choses sont belles en leur temps; aussi a-t-il mis le monde en leur coeur, sans toutefois que l'homme puisse comprendre d'un bout à l'autre l'oeuvre que Dieu a faite. | He hath made everything beautiful in its time: also he hath set eternity in their heart, yet so that man cannot find out the work that God hath done from the beginning even to the end. |
| 12 | C'est pourquoi j'ai connu qu'il n'y a rien de meilleur aux hommes, que de se réjouir, et de bien faire pendant leur vie. | I know that there is nothing better for them, than to rejoice, and to do good so long as they live. |
| 13 | Et même, que chacun mange et boive, et qu'il jouisse du bien de tout son travail, c'est un don de Dieu. | And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy good in all his labor, is the gift of God. |
| 14 | J'ai connu que quoi que Dieu fasse, c'est toujours lui-même, on ne saurait qu'y ajouter, ni qu'en diminuer; et Dieu le fait afin qu'on le craigne. | I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor anything taken from it; and God hath done it, that men should fear before him. |
| 15 | Ce qui a été, est maintenant; et ce qui doit être, a déjà été; et Dieu rappelle ce qui est passé. | That which is hath been long ago; and that which is to be hath long ago been: and God seeketh again that which is passed away. |
| 16 | J'ai encore vu sous le soleil, qu'au lieu établi pour juger, il y a de la méchanceté; et qu'au lieu établi pour faire justice, il y a aussi de la méchanceté. | And moreover I saw under the sun, in the place of justice, that wickedness was there; and in the place of righteousness, that wickedness was there. |
| 17 | Et j'ai dit en mon coeur: Dieu jugera le juste et l'injuste; car il y a là un temps pour toute chose, et sur toute oeuvre. | I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked; for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work. |
| 18 | J'ai pensé en mon coeur sur l'état des hommes, que Dieu les en éclaircirait, et qu'ils verraient qu'ils ne sont que des bêtes. | I said in my heart, [It is] because of the sons of men, that God may prove them, and that they may see that they themselves are [but as] beasts. |
| 19 | Car l'accident qui arrive aux hommes, et l'accident qui arrive aux bêtes est un même accident: telle qu'est la mort de l'un, telle est la mort de l'autre; et ils ont tous un même souffle, et l'homme n'a point d'avantage sur la bête; car tout est vanité. | For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; and man hath no preeminence above the beasts: for all is vanity. |
| 20 | Tout va en un même lieu; tout a été fait de la poudre, et tout retourne en la poudre. | All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again. |
| 21 | Qui est-ce qui connaît que le souffle des hommes monte en haut, et que le souffle de la bête descend en bas en terre? | Who knoweth the spirit of man, whether it goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast, whether it goeth downward to the earth? |
| 22 | J'ai donc connu qu'il n'y a rien de meilleur à l'homme que de se réjouir en ce qu'il fait; parce que c'est là sa portion; car qui est-ce qui le ramènera pour voir ce qui sera après lui? | Wherefore I saw that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him [back] to see what shall be after him? |
