| 3 | J'ai recherché en moi-même le moyen de me traiter délicatement, de faire que mon coeur s'accoutumât cependant à la sagesse, et qu'il comprît ce que c'est que la folie, jusques à ce que je visse ce qu'il serait bon aux hommes de faire sous les cieux, pendant les jours de leur vie. | I searched in my heart how to cheer my flesh with wine, my heart yet guiding [me] with wisdom, and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what it was good for the sons of men that they should do under heaven all the days of their life. | Ho cercato nel mio cuore come soddisfare il mio corpo col vino, spronando nello stesso tempo il mio cuore alla sapienza e a stare attaccato alla follia finché vedessi qual è il bene che i figli degli uomini dovrebbero fare sotto il cielo, tutti i giorni della loro vita. |

| 6 | Je me suis fait des réservoirs d'eaux, pour en arroser le parc planté d'arbres. | I made me pools of water, to water therefrom the forest where trees were reared; | mi costruii vasche per l'acqua con le quali poter irrigare il bosco per far crescere gli alberi. |
| 7 | J'ai acquis des hommes et des femmes esclaves; et j'ai eu des esclaves nés en ma maison, et j'ai eu plus de gros et de menu bétail que tous ceux qui ont été avant moi dans Jérusalem. | I bought men-servants and maid-servants, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of herds and flocks, above all that were before me in Jerusalem; | Comprai servi e serve ed ebbi servi nati in casa; ebbi anche grandi averi in armenti e greggi, più di tutti quelli che erano stati prima di me in Gerusalemme. |
| 8 | Je me suis aussi amassé de l'argent et de l'or, et des plus précieux joyaux qui se trouvent chez les Rois et dans les Provinces; je me suis acquis des chanteurs et des chanteuses, et les délices des hommes, une harmonie d'instruments de musique, même plusieurs harmonies de toutes sortes d'instruments; | I gathered me also silver and gold, and the treasure of kings and of the provinces; I gat me men-singers and women-singers, and the delights of the sons of men, musical instruments, and that of all sorts. | Ammassai per me anche argento, oro e le ricchezze dei re e delle province; mi procurai dei cantanti e delle cantanti, le delizie dei figli degli uomini e strumenti musicali di ogni genere. |
| 9 | Je me suis agrandi, et je me suis accru plus que tous ceux qui ont été avant moi dans Jérusalem, et ma sagesse est demeurée avec moi. | So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me. | Così divenni grande e prosperai più di tutti quelli che erano stati prima di me in Gerusalemme; anche la mia sapienza rimase con me. |
| 10 | Enfin, je n'ai rien refusé à mes yeux de tout ce qu'ils ont demandé, et je n'ai épargné aucune joie à mon coeur; car mon coeur s'est réjoui de tout mon travail; et c'est là tout ce que j'ai eu de tout mon travail. | And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them; I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced because of all my labor; and this was my portion from all my labor. | Tutto quello che i miei occhi desideravano, non l'ho negato loro; non ho rifiutato al mio cuore alcun piacere, perché il mio cuore si rallegrava di ogni mio lavoro; e questa è stata la ricompensa di ogni mio lavoro. |
| 11 | Mais ayant considéré toutes mes oeuvres que mes mains avaient faites, et tout le travail auquel je m'étais occupé en les faisant, voilà tout était vanité, et rongement d'esprit; tellement que l'homme n'a aucun avantage de ce qui est sous le soleil. | Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labor that I had labored to do; and, behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was no profit under the sun. | Poi mi volsi a considerare tutte le opere che le mie mani avevano fatto, e la fatica che avevo impiegato a compierle; ed ecco tutto era vanità e un cercare di afferrare il vento; non c'era alcun vantaggio sotto il sole. | 12 | Puis je me suis mis à considérer tant la sagesse, que les sottises, et la folie, (or qui est l'homme qui pourrait suivre le Roi en ce qui a été déjà fait?) | And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what [can] the man [do] that cometh after the king? [even] that which hath been done long ago. | Allora mi volsi a considerare la sapienza, la follia e la stoltezza. Che cosa farà l'uomo che succederà al re, se non ciò che è già stato fatto?. |
| 13 | Et j'ai vu que la sagesse a beaucoup d'avantage sur la folie, comme la lumière a beaucoup d'avantage sur les ténèbres. | Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness. | Poi mi resi conto che la sapienza ha un vantaggio sulla stoltezza, come la luce ha un vantaggio sulle tenebre. |
| 14 | Le sage a ses yeux en sa tête, et le fou marche dans les ténèbres; mais j'ai aussi connu qu'un même accident leur arrive à tous. | The wise man`s eyes are in his head, and the fool walketh in darkness: and yet I perceived that one event happeneth to them all. | Il saggio ha gli occhi in testa, mentre lo stolto cammina nelle tenebre, ma ho pure compreso che ad entrambi è riservata la stessa sorte. |
| 15 | C'est pourquoi j'ai dit en mon coeur: Il m'arrivera comme au fou; de quoi donc me servira-t-il alors d'avoir été plus sage? C'est pourquoi j'ai dit en mon coeur, que cela aussi est une vanité. | Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so will it happen even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then said I in my heart, that this also is vanity. | Così ho detto in cuor mio: La stessa sorte che tocca allo stolto toccherà anche a me. A che pro dunque essere stato più saggio?. Perciò dissi in cuor mio: Anche questo è vanità. |
| 16 | Car on ne se souviendra pas du sage, non plus que du fou; parce que ce qui est maintenant, va être oublié dans les jours qui suivent; et comment le sage meurt-il de même que le fou? | For of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is no remembrance for ever; seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. And how doth the wise man die even as the fool! | Non rimane infatti alcun ricordo duraturo né del saggio né dello stolto, poiché nei giorni a venire sarà tutto dimenticato. E come muore lo stolto, allo stesso modo muore il saggio. |
| 17 | C'est pourquoi j'ai haï cette vie, à cause que les choses qui se sont faites sous le soleil m'ont déplu; car tout est vanité, et rongement d'esprit. | So I hated life, because the work that is wrought under the sun was grievous unto me; for all is vanity and a striving after wind. | Perciò ho preso in odio la vita, perché tutto ciò che si fa sotto il sole mi è divenuto disgustoso, perché tutto è vanità e un cercare di afferrare il vento. |
| 18 | J'ai aussi haï tout mon travail, auquel je me suis occupé sous le soleil, parce que je le laisserai à l'homme qui sera après moi. | And I hated all my labor wherein I labored under the sun, seeing that I must leave it unto the man that shall be after me. | Così ho odiato ogni fatica che ho compiuto sotto il sole, perché devo lasciare tutto a colui che verrà dopo di me. |
| 19 | Et qui sait s'il sera sage ou fou? Cependant il sera maître de tout mon travail, auquel je me suis occupé, et de ce en quoi j'ai été sage sous le soleil; cela aussi est une vanité. | And who knoweth whether he will be a wise man or a fool? yet will he have rule over all my labor wherein I have labored, and wherein I have showed myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity. | E chi sa se sarà saggio o stolto? Ma comunque egli sarà padrone di tutto il lavoro che ho compiuto con fatica e in cui ho usato sapienza sotto il sole. Anche questo è vanità. |
| 20 | C'est pourquoi j'ai fait en sorte que mon coeur perdît toute espérance de tout le travail auquel je m'étais occupé sous le soleil. | Therefore I turned about to cause my heart to despair concerning all the labor wherein I had labored under the sun. | Così sono arrivato al punto di disperare in cuor mio per tutta la fatica che ho compiuto sotto il sole. |
| 21 | Car il y a tel homme, dont le travail a été avec sagesse, science, et adresse, qui néanmoins le laisse à celui qui n'y a point travaillé comme étant sa part; cela aussi est une vanité et un grand mal. | For there is a man whose labor is with wisdom, and with knowledge, and with skilfulness; yet to a man that hath not labored therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil. | Poiché qui c'è un uomo che ha lavorato con sapienza, con intelligenza e con successo, ma deve lasciare la sua eredità a un altro, che non vi ha speso alcuna fatica! Anche questo è vanità e un male grande. |
| 22 | Car qu'est-ce que l'homme a de tout son travail, et du rongement de son coeur, dont il se travaille sous le soleil? | For what hath a man of all his labor, and of the striving of his heart, wherein he laboreth under the sun? | Che cosa rimane infatti all'uomo per tutta la sua fatica e per l'affanno del suo cuore, con cui si è affaticato a sotto il sole? |
| 23 | Puisque tous ses jours ne sont que douleurs, et son occupation que chagrin; même la nuit son coeur ne repose point; cela aussi est une vanité. | For all his days are [but] sorrows, and his travail is grief; yea, even in the night his heart taketh no rest. This also is vanity. | Tutti i suoi giorni non sono che dolori e il suo lavoro penoso. Il suo cuore non riposa neppure di notte. Anche questo è vanità. |
| 24 | N'est-ce donc pas un bien pour l'homme de manger, et de boire, et de faire que son âme jouisse du bien dans son travail? J'ai vu aussi que cela vient de la main de Dieu. | There is nothing better for a man [than] that he should eat and drink, and make his soul enjoy good in his labor. This also I saw, that it is from the hand of God. | Per l'uomo non c'è nulla di meglio che mangiare e bere e godersela nella sua fatica; ma mi sono accorto che anche questo viene dalla mano di DIO. |
| 25 | Car qui en mangera, et qui s'en sentira plutôt que moi? | For who can eat, or who can have enjoyment, more than I? | Chi può infatti mangiare o godere più di me? |
| 26 | Parce que Dieu donne à celui qui lui est agréable, de la sagesse, de la science, et de la joie; mais il donne au pécheur de l'occupation à recueillir et à assembler, afin que cela soit donné à celui qui est agréable à Dieu; cela aussi est une vanité, et un rongement d'esprit. | For to the man that pleaseth him [God] giveth wisdom, and knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that pleaseth God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind. | Poiché Dio dà all'uomo che gli è gradito sapienza, conoscenza e gioia; ma al peccatore dà il compito di raccogliere e di accumulare, per lasciare poi tutto a colui che è gradito agli occhi di DIO. Anche questo è vanità e un cercare di afferrare il vento. |
