Choisissez un homme qui descende contre moi. | And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a javelin of brass between his shoulders. |
| 8 | S'il l'emporte en se battant avec moi et qu'il me tue, nous vous serons assujettis; mais si je l'emporte sur lui et que je le tue, vous nous serez assujettis et vous nous servirez. » | And the staff of his spear was like a weaver`s beam; and his spear`s head [weighed] six hundred shekels of iron: and his shield-bearer went before him. |

| 10 | En entendant ces paroles du Philistin, Saül et tout Israël furent effrayés et saisis d'une grande crainte. | If he be able to fight with me, and kill me, then will we be your servants; but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us. |
| 11 | Or David était fils de cet Ephratéen de Bethléem de Juda nommé Isaï, qui avait huit fils; cet homme, au temps de Saül, était vieux, avancé en âge. | And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together. |
| 12 | Les trois fils aînés d'Isaï étaient allés suivre Saül à la guerre; et les noms de ces trois fils qui étaient allés à la guerre étaient Eliab l'aîné, Abinadab le second, et Samma le troisième. | And when Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid. |
| 13 | David était le plus jeune. Les trois aînés suivaient Saül, | Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Beth-lehem-judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man was an old man in the days of Saul, stricken [in years] among men. |
| 14 | et David allait et venait d'auprès de Saül, pour paître les brebis de son père à Bethléem. | And the three eldest sons of Jesse had gone after Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the first-born, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah. |
| 15 | Le Philistin s'avançait matin et soir, et il se présenta pendant quarante jours. | And David was the youngest; and the three eldest followed Saul. |
| 16 | Isaï dit à David, son fils : « Prends pour tes frères cet épha de grain rôti et ces dix pains, et cours au camp vers tes frères. | Now David went to and fro from Saul to feed his father`s sheep at Beth-lehem. |
| 17 | Et ces dix fromages, porte-les au chef de leur millier. Tu visiteras tes frères pour voir s'ils se portent bien, et tu prendras d'eux un gage. | And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days. |
| 18 | Saül et eux, et tous les hommes d'Israël, sont dans la vallée de Térébinthe, faisant la guerre aux Philistins. » | And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched grain, and these ten loaves, and carry [them] quickly to the camp to thy brethren; |
| 19 | David se leva de bon matin et, laissant les brebis à un gardien, il prit les provisions et partit, comme Isaï le lui avait commandé. Quand il arriva au campement, l'armée sortait du camp pour se ranger en bataille et on poussait des cris de guerre. | and bring these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge. |
| 20 | Israélites et Philistins se rangèrent en ligne, troupe contre troupe. | Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the vale of Elah, fighting with the Philistines. |
| 21 | David déposa ses bagages entre les mains du gardien des bagages, et courut vers la troupe. Aussitôt arrivé, il demanda à ses frères comment ils se portaient. | And Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, army against army. |
| 22 | Pendant qu'il s'entretenait avec eux, voici que le champion, il se nommait Goliath, le Philistin de Geth, s'avança hors des rangs des Philistins, tenant les mêmes discours et David l'entendit. | And David left his baggage in the hand of the keeper of the baggage, and ran to the army, and came and saluted his brethren. |
| 23 | En voyant cet homme, tous ceux d'Israël se retirèrent devant lui, saisis d'une grande crainte. | And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the ranks of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them. |
| 24 | Un Israélite dit : « Voyez-vous cet homme qui s'avance ? C'est pour défier Israël qu'il s'avance. Celui qui le tuera, le roi le comblera de grandes richesses, il lui donnera sa fille et il affranchira de toute charge la maison de son père en Israël. » | And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid. |
| 25 | David dit aux hommes qui se tenaient près de lui : « Que fera-t-on à celui qui tuera ce Philistin et qui ôtera l'opprobre de dessus Israël ? Qui est donc ce Philistin, cet incirconcis, pour insulter les troupes du Dieu vivant ? » | And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father`s house free in Israel. |
| 26 | Le peuple lui répéta les mêmes paroles, en disant : « Voilà ce qu'on fera à celui qui le tuera. » | And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? |
| 27 | Eliab, son frère aîné, l'entendit parler aux hommes, et la colère d'Eliab s'enflamma contre David, et il dit : « Pourquoi es-tu descendu, et à qui as-tu laissé ce petit nombre de brebis dans le désert ? Je connais ton orgueil et la malice de ton coeur; c'est pour voir la bataille que tu es descendu. » | And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him. |
| 28 | David répondit : « Qu'ai-je fait maintenant ? N'est-ce pas une simple parole ? » | And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab`s anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why art thou come down? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thy heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle. |
| 29 | Et, se détournant de lui pour s'adresser à un autre, il tint le même langage; et le peuple lui répondit comme la première fois. | And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause? |
| 30 | Lorsqu'on eut entendu les paroles prononcées par David, on les rapporta à Saül, qui le fit venir. | And he turned away from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner. |
| 31 | David dit à Saül : « Que le coeur ne défaille à personne! Ton serviteur ira combattre contre ce Philistin. » | And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul; and he sent for him. |
| 32 | Saül dit à David : « Tu ne peux aller contre ce Philistin pour combattre avec lui, car tu es un enfant, et il est un homme de guerre depuis sa jeunesse. » | And David said to Saul, Let no man`s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine. |
| 33 | David dit à Saül : « Lorsque ton serviteur faisait paître les brebis de son père, et qu'un lion ou un ours venait et enlevait une brebis du troupeau, | And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth. |
| 34 | je me mettais à sa poursuite, je le frappais et j'arrachais la brebis de sa gueule; s'il se dressait contre moi, je le saisissais à la mâchoire, je le frappais et je le tuais. | And David said unto Saul, Thy servant was keeping his father`s sheep; and when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock, |
| 35 | Ton serviteur a tué le lion comme l'ours, et il en sera du Philistin, de cet incirconcis, comme de l'un d'eux, car il a insulté les troupes du Dieu vivant. » | I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth; and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. |
| 36 | David ajouta : « Yahweh qui m'a délivré du lion et de l'ours, me délivrera aussi de la main de ce Philistin. » Et Saül dit à David : « Va, et que Yahweh soit avec toi! » | Thy servant smote both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. |
| 37 | Saül fit revêtir David de ses habits, mit sur sa tête un casque d'airain et l'endossa d'une cuirasse; | And David said, Jehovah that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and Jehovah shall be with thee. |
| 38 | puis David ceignit l'épée de Saül par-dessus son armure, et il essaya de marcher, car il n'avait jamais essayé d'armure. David dit à Saül : « Je ne puis marcher avec ces armes, je n'y suis point accoutumé. » Et, s'en étant débarrassé, | And Saul clad David with his apparel, and he put a helmet of brass upon his head, and he clad him with a coat of mail. |
| 39 | David prit en main son bâton, choisit dans le torrent cinq cailloux polis et les mit dans son sac de berger, dans sa gibecière. Puis, sa fronde à la main, il s'avança vers le Philistin. | And David girded his sword upon his apparel, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him. |
| 40 | Le Philistin s'approcha peu à peu de David, précédé de l'homme qui portait le bouclier. | And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the shepherd`s bag which he had, even in his wallet; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine. |
| 41 | Le Philistin regarda, vit David et le méprisa, car il était très jeune, blond et beau de visage. | And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him. |
| 42 | Le Philistin dit à David : « Suis-je un chien, que tu viennes à moi avec un bâton ? » Et le Philistin maudit David par ses dieux. | And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him; for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and withal of a fair countenance. |
| 43 | Et le Philistin dit à David : « Viens à moi, que je donne ta chair aux oiseaux du ciel et aux bêtes des champs. » | And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. |
| 44 | David répondit au Philistin : « Tu viens à moi avec l'épée, la lance et le javelot; et moi je viens à toi au nom de Yahweh des armées, du Dieu des bataillons d'Israël, que tu as insulté. | And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the birds of the heavens, and to the beasts of the field. |
| 45 | Aujourd'hui Yahweh te livrera entre mes mains, je te frapperai et j'enlèverai ta tête de dessus toi; aujourd'hui je donnerai les cadavres de l'armée des Philistins aux oiseaux du ciel et aux animaux de la terre; et toute la terre saura qu'Israël a un Dieu; | Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a javelin: but I come to thee in the name of Jehovah of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. |
| 46 | et toute cette multitude saura que ce n'est ni par l'épée ou par la lance que Yahweh sauve, car à Yahweh appartient la guerre, et il vous a livrés entre nos mains. » | This day will Jehovah deliver thee into my hand; and I will smite thee, and take thy head from off thee; and I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day unto the birds of the heavens, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, |
| 47 | Le Philistin, s'étant levé, se mit en marche et s'avança au-devant de David, et David se hâta de courir, vers le front de la troupe, à la rencontre du Philistin. | and that all this assembly may know that Jehovah saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is Jehovah`s, and he will give you into our hand. |
| 48 | David mit la main dans sa gibecière, en retira une pierre et la lança avec sa fronde; il frappa le Philistin au front, et la pierre s'enfonça dans son front, et il tomba le visage contre terre. | And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. |
| 49 | Ainsi David, avec une fronde et une pierre, fut plus fort que le Philistin, il frappa à mort le Philistin. Et il n'y avait pas d'épée dans la main de David. | And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead; and the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell upon his face to the earth. |
| 50 | David courut, s'arrêta près du Philistin et, s'étant saisi de son épée qu'il tira du fourreau, il le tua et lui coupa la tête avec elle. | So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. |
| 51 | Voyant leur héros mort, les Philistins prirent la fuite. Et les hommes d'Israël et de Juda se levèrent, en poussant des cris, et poursuivirent les Philistins jusqu'à l'entrée de Geth et jusqu'aux portes d'Accaron. Les cadavres des Philistins jonchèrent le chemin de Saraïm jusqu'à Geth et jusqu'à Accaron. | Then David ran, and stood over the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. |
| 52 | A leur retour de la poursuite des Philistins, les enfants d'Israël pillèrent leur camp. | And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou comest to Gai, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron. |
| 53 | David prit la tête du Philistin et la fit porter à Jérusalem, et il mit dans sa tente les armes du Philistin. | And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they plundered their camp. |
| 54 | Lorsque Saül eut vu David s'avancer à la rencontre du Philistin, il dit à Abner, chef de l'armée : « De qui ce jeune homme est-il fils, Abner ? » Abner répondit : « Aussi vrai que ton âme est vivante, ô roi, je l'ignore. » | And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armor in his tent. |
| 55 | Le roi lui dit : « Informe-toi donc de qui est fils ce jeune homme. » | And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell. |
| 56 | Quand David fut de retour après avoir tué le Philistin, Abner le prit et le mena devant Saül; David avait à la main la tête du Philistin. | And the king said, Inquire thou whose son the stripling is. |
| 57 | Saül lui dit : « De qui es-tu fils, jeune homme. » Et David répondit : « Je suis fils de ton serviteur, Isaï de Bethléem. » | And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. |
| 58 | Lorsque David eut achevé de parler à Saül, l'âme de Jonathas s'attacha à l'âme de David, et Jonathas l'aima comme son âme. | And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Beth-lehemite. |
